Need help with mixer/computer hook up.

Im new to recording. I have a ub1202 behringer mixer and a e-mu 0404 sound card. Im planning on getting some monitors, I just use headphones. For now, I just plan on recording guitar, no drums yet and I was wondering...what is the most efficient way of hooking my mixer to my sound card? Where would I hook up monitors, from the sound card output or somewhere off the mixer? Im a total n00b at this. Is there anything else I should buy?

You can use the main outs L&R to your soundcard. You will need jack to whatever connector it is for your sound card for each side. When you have your monitors you can use the cntrl room outs from you desk to them.

main out l&r yes, but pan first channel hard left, and second channel hard right. then only channel 1 coming out main left, and only channel 2 coming out main right.

I don't think you can route signal back into the mixer and have both incoming, and pre-recorded signal come out correctly. I think you'd need to connect your monitor solution directly to the outputs of the sound card.

I could be wrong, but I looked through the circuit (block) diagram for the ub802, and it doesn't look like it will do what we want.

These would have to be powered monitors for it to work this way otherwise an amp to power the monitors would be required.

he'll only hear the incoming signal. unless someone can figure out if the pre-recorded signal can be folded back into the mixer, and then out the ctrl room, without being re-recorded into the incoming signal.

I don't think it'll work, but I've only looked at the diagram.

Anybody know if this will work? Seems like we've tackled this problem before, and it didn't work out.

I'm getting tempted to buy a little 8channel, just to see if it'll work.

But yes, BH is right, you'll need powered speakers, or an amp to power the speakers.

In his situation going direct out of the 0404 outputs to the speakers will avoid having the foldback into the mix.

Kaos, I know all too well what no sleep can do to a brain. Watch some of my lame typos and you'll see what I mean.

dB caught a good one that could have been disastress in a post a couple weeks ago. I typed Loser instead of Lower. Lucky for me he caught it within about 10 minutes and i quickly edited my post.

I use a tiny 12 channel mackie mixer to overdub onto a computer.

maybe i'm misunderstanding the question but here's what i do.

mixer main outs -> computer.
computer stereo out -> 'tape in' RCAs
i monitor out the control room outs or headphones.

very simple, but maybe because the mackie has alot of routing control. not sure about the behringers. i assumed all that stuff was pretty universal on mixers.

mine's the little 1202-VLZ and it seems to have no problem monitoring while i record with no re-recording of the previous tracks. no bleed.

cheers, hope it helps

i must admit, balancing levels can be difficult. no volume control for the tape inputs on the 1202vlz. i guess that's the drawback.

In the small UB series, the tape in, and control room circuit routes the signal in ways that don't seem to work for this 'foldback' type of routing.

Like I mentioned earlier, I could be wrong, I haven't actually layed hands on one to try it out.
