Low end distortion

Im having trouble recording my guitar when I turn the tone knob to all bass (or cut all treble). Im not sure if its the amp or the mics. I was using a shure SM57 and a MXL 991. When I turn the tone knob back up, the distortion goes away. Any ideas? This is happening at very low levels.

I guess I would start by removing variables from the situation. Do you hear the distortion with just your ears in front of the amp? If not, are you overdriving the mic? Are you overdriving the preamp? Etc... Work your way through the system....
