Hey guys, it's been a while. I've been having some software issues lately and it's hexed my recording capabilities, so I haven't made any big new compositions lately.

However, the other night I stayed up till dawn until I finished at least one new recording for my own entertainment. It was completely improvised and briefly edited. It's nothing catchy or "poppy," but it's just one of my typical relaxing recordings that those of you who remember me might be able to relate to.

Please download it from my MySpace. It's the first song on the list titled "Rise of the Sun." And try not to operate heavy machinery while listening to it ;)

Enjoy!

you look like the russian boxer that killed Apollo Creed!
the sound is warm and invitin though. it would sound great in a movie, as the astronaut drifts off into space, alone, dying, thinking of his life..... then maybe, just maybe theres a chance his crew can save him, but no..... good stuff

Yes I enjoyed it as well, I love that type of music. Have you listened to David Helpling's album "Sleeping on the edge of the world"?

...that is the best cd I will ever own. So give it a listen if you havent already.

I took a look at your profile and I use a yamaha DJX as well for a midi controller. So what did you use to generate the patches in your song?

Thanks Goldenmean.

As far as patching goes, I rarely use midi, so all the music you hear in Rise of the Sun is performed in live audio (usually improvised). The particular voice I used was the strings voice (voice 125) with slow attack on the assign knob. Hall 2 reverb at the default level (30).

The effects I added to give the music more flow are a part of my Sonar package. I used Cakewalk FXReverb at my own parameters and Sonitus:default fx 2-delay.

I then, of course, added my vocals (as dangerous as that was, for it was so early in the morning when recording this). All vocals were adlibbed and I just kept them on the same track as the strings so they both shared the same effects.

Hope that answers your question. And I will look out for that David Helpling album :)

Yess you should buy that album immediatly. It has raving reviews online as well.

But this is very encouraging because I do not use midi either and that is met with great skepticism among the workers in the pro-audio department at guitar center (my favorite store). I can see where midi has its advantages with timing etc. But it is so complicated and sucks the life out of improvisational inspiration. In any case, I am amazed at how you made those strings sound. lol that is a cheap keyboard but you would never know it listening to the nice intro you have.

did you only use the DJX for the other tracks on your myspace? Most of the sounds in "Enchanted Romance" sound familiar to me.

In any case, great work especially with just that keyboard! I like your other songs as well!

yeah, about 90% of my music is using my cheapo DJX. I also love Guitar Center and hope to save up for something a little more elaborate with a lot of different synthy pads. The DJX has done a lot for me these past several years, but the sound becomes more generic with every new idea I have. And it takes a lot of experimenting to get the right sound using this toy.

Sometimes I will use my own drumloops made using FruityLoops for some of my music. But every song on my MySpace is simply the DJX and my vocals. I can't sing too well, so I tend to just do some "native chanting," as I have always like the style of native chant.

I always had a fascination with film music. It's what got me into music in the first place, and that's why a lot of my work sound like it was made for film. It's a dirty shame that my technique at playing keys is so horrible, otherwise I might actually be pursuing a real career in music.

But I do agree that midi sucks the life out of music. Whenever I compose a new piece, I try to avoid making it too technical. I think some of the most enjoyable and relaxing music should be highly organic and abstract in nature.

Do you have any music online? I'd be interested in hearing some of your works....

no sorry, I really just have a hard drive chock full of fragments of songs. Some are a minute, some are three. I am proud of certain songs but I did them so long ago that all of the problems I had recording back then are quite evident. I will try to get one up tommorow if you can bare the quality. I have been very busy with work and school so its been stagnant on the music front, but now I am getting back with it. Anyway, this is pretty cool because we seem just alike, I also got into music for the sole purpose of film music. Since I was little I loved it and tinkered on the piano trying to make my own themes.

LOL and your "native chanting"! Thats funny because I do the same thing since I cant sing either haha. I also use my voice for sampling and use effects to basically make it a new sound all together.

I totally agree with your take on organic music. I love music that sets a real mood. But don't be discouraged about Key technique. Your stuff is fine! Its ok if its mainly simpler overlapping riffs, so long as it sounds good. I like that better anyway than a showy piano solo.

But since this is getting rediculously long here is a piece of advice. get the Roland XV-5050 rack synth. IT IS AWSOME. Great value man, it sells new for $800 retail and has an interface a baby could use. It has 1200 pre-rendered patches which are breathtaking and conjure instant inspiration. Aside from that it has limitless possibilities for custom patches. This is definatly the cheapest way to go and I have heard units three times its price that dont come close to its quality. GET ITTT.

Ok, hope you loved my novel lol

Your novel was quite touching! ;)

I look foward to hearing your music, but take your time. Don't worry about quality... I'm not too critical about it.

It's nice to hear that there are other film music-crazed fans out there. Thanks for the synth advice. I will definately look into it!
