Do you mean the pots that are physically on your guitar? I never turn them down, they are almost always up full...

I always have the guitar all the way up and use the preamp for any fine adjustments...I have had some guitars thru life that don't even have a volume pot on the guitar, it's just set to 11 all the time...

Hell yeah, Deebs !
I 'usually' back it off just a bit from full on... but it depends what sound you're looking for . Trust the force... uhm, I mean your ears . You shouldn't get any excessive noise from cranking it, if that's your concern .

You CAN NOT have Nigel Tufnel as you avatar and say anything remotely close to "back it off a bit from full on"...that's just, well, just...wrong...

Some guitars change their tone with volume adjustments. I'm more of a full-on kinda guy myself, though with my epiphone, I can change volume at the guitar and the tone stays like it is when full on.

But in the studio, I'd say the hotter the signal, the less likelyhood of getting noise in with the signal. If you have to increase the volume later, then you'll increase noise along with it. Best to keep the git vol pegged, I'd think, then adjust gain on the board / preamp.

Hehehehe. Yeah your volume knob sould be detented at 10, so you can click it on over to 11 when you need that extra oomph. :-D

It just depends on what tone you're going for. Lots of guitarists use the volume knob to vary the amount that they drive their amp. Back it off for cleaner tone, turn it up for dirtier tone. But with good, dynamic pickups and an amp with a good dynamic touch, you can accomplish the same thing by simply varying how hard you pick. I love having my amp's preamp gain set right to that point where if I play soft, I get a clean tone, and if I strum a big open G5, I get a great distorted tone.

...then kick on a compressor/sustainer to hold the signal right above that dynamic threshold for a great lead tone. Man, I wanna go home and play guitar now!

Just wait one cotton-pickin' moment ! I've spent years living in Eleven Land, and there is a time and place for backing it off a half-notch . SO just because I have THE coolest MOST rockin' (blatantly-plucked) avatar in the WORLD, that's no reason to pick on me... "Mr Eleven" .

As Pat was saying, some guits change tone with volume adjustments, so trust your ears rivargj... or just rip-out your pots and call it '11', like some people . 8 P

LOL

Just FYI, I did some messing around with my Variax the other day, and regarding the change in tone from volume pot changes...the Variax actually does model those tone changes on some guitar models...move the volume and it' changes tone in the old models it copies...kinda cool.

Mind you messing around is the only time I dial back off of 11.

My future siter in law just got a job with Line 6. I've told here, "Hook me up with some free sh**!"
Wonder if she ever will.

I was just looking throught the Warmoth website, and they now have bodies that are routed to accept Variax eletronics! Call me shallow, but I just don't like the way the Variax looks (except for the acoustic). Maybe I can get futuresisterinlaw to help me get a discount on some Variax guts, and build a strat around it.

As for the volume on recordings, rivagj, it's usually best to have the guitar and amp "hot" as it gives a better signal to noise ratio. Using the pre-amp to bring up the signal is a sound way of doing things. Make sure the mixer is at unity.

I didn't like the 300 much, but the 700 is one of the most comfortable guitars I have ever played...looks, well, if you have seen my other main guitar you'll see looks mean exactly **** to me...my other guitar is butt-f'in ugly.

What department of Line 6 is she in?

passive electronics i keep pretty much cranked, although Tadpui has a good point...but just last night i had to turn my active bass down cuz it was distorting the input of the amp...

btw i'm in a band now...i was first call for a Nashville rock band called Thousandfold (www.thousandfold.net and myspace) these cats have been good friends with us (DBD crew) for some time now and we just had our first 'practice' together last night....it feels good to be in a functioning band again...it's been two years since the last one...good times!

cheers

and hue, the tape recorder is still at the practice spot!!! i told ya things take time down here! haha checkin' out those pics here in a min.

Isnt it funny how the 11 thing can bring out the best in everyone?

Anyway, the only time I turn the guitar off 11 is in a live situation were you want to roll off the gain a tad. Most good pickups allow a slight roll off on the volume knob without loosing much volume and only getting that slight change in gain bite.

Why don't they just make 10 the high number? What significance does 11 have? Why not make it 12? Or 13?

11? Well, it's one louder then, isn't it? When you are at 10, all the way up across the board, where can you go? No where, so when you need that extra push over the cliff, so to speak, 11!

Hey dB-Wan.
F-S-I-L (future sister in law) has just joined Line-6 in purchasing. I'm sure I'll be hitting her up for some "staff discount." She left a job at Seymour Duncan for that job...

By the way, are you talking of your Washburn as butt ugly?
I have the B20 bass, and I think it's lovely - in a sick eighties hair band kinda way.

As for the variax, I just have an easier time picking up a guitar I like the look of (I know, I'm shallow). Gets me playing more. More I play, the more inspiration comes. The more inspiration, the more recording I do. The variax isn't pretty (to me), so I think I'd play it less. If I had the electrical guts in a nice looking strat, now that would be in my hands all the time.

By the way, do the guts get better with each series 600-700 etc. or is it just the git-fiddle?

Yeah, my Washburn A10
http://www.dbmasters.net/images/personal/studio_guitar.jpg

look at that beast, but I'll tell ya, she's an awesome guitar. I had a B20 headless bass for a while, didn't like it nearly as much as I do the A10.

yeah, I see what you are saying about looking nice making you pick it up more. Personally, my blue Variax I think is beautiful...but different tastes abound...

Man, she is in purchasing, thats cool.

the electronics are the same across the board, the guitars themselves are substantially improved going up models...the 700 is awesome.

I took a look at their website. They have a direct link to the Warmoth site now!

Think Strat with walnut body (or semi-hollow with figured maple top), ebony fingerboard, chrome hardware, tortoiseshell plate, birds eye maple neck, with Variax guts.
Hooowwwwwweeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!
Would you play it CONSTANTLY?
