Guys,
I'm half way betwen weeping and destroying something.
I was setting up my C02's and I unplugged one whilst it was still recieving power. I had turned the desk and phantom off but the light hadn't faded completely.
Now the mic is making a noise like wind rustling in it even at low volumes.
Have I broken it or could it be something else? I've tried it with differet cables and pre-amps. same story.
Will I get a refund if I send it back like this?

Jan 14, 2006 01:58 pm Bummer! Does the other one still work OK? Seems like simply unplugging it shouldn't destroy anything, but I'm not really knowledgable in these matters, just trying to see it logically: That is, a cable being unplugged should just act like a switch anyway... Does the user's guide warn against doing it? If not, I'd return it...
Maybe you should just send them both to me and I'll check them out for you, no charge... :)

Jan 14, 2006 02:14 pm Ha!
I'll send 'em to you when you send me that 4047 for the meantime :)
I've heard that unplugging a condensor whilst phantom was on used to be a sackable offence!
I'm an imbecile.

Jan 14, 2006 06:11 pm I've heard that as well, but now I know its not just lore!
Jan 14, 2006 06:12 pm I woudldn't know about tha sackable, I've never done it... :)
Jan 14, 2006 06:55 pm Are you sure.....
I did this many a time, unbeknowst to me, when I was starting. Can't say I've had any problems. And I've never been warned about it when buying mics.
Sure its not your cable or input on your desk?

Jan 14, 2006 07:11 pm ...and when doing the movie people wondered why I preffered to tear down myself...
I think I get a reputation as a crazy reculse... I'm not a recluse...
during post production when I was cutting audio I think the ME66K6 was unplugged about 5 times... it's not describeable as a "pop" but more as a "BANG" ... I expect to hear the voice of GOD afterwards... even if it just Him checking to see if my monitors were all right..
Jan 14, 2006 07:54 pm And I have some handheld condensers for PA that have been unplugged while still hot, didn't kill them but sure tried to turn the speakers inside out...

Jan 14, 2006 08:42 pm Flashman, have you tried other gear, like with a mixer, another strip? Or if the computer interface, another strip? You may have inadvertantly burned-up something else...

Jan 14, 2006 09:00 pm Yep, unplugging or plgguing in a condesnor while the phantom is on can be a bad thing. Probably more so for a SDC then an LDC. But it has been done with no ill effects here as well. I try not to do it though as it is an unwriten rule not to do that.
