Home recording & live performance setup?

Hi all. Im new to all this and need a little help if possible.

Basically I would like a setup that allows me to record at home or in a live environment but will also allow me to perform in a live environment (and obviously record my performance also).

This will probably narrow it down to a laptop but the rest of it is really a mystery to me.

For example I was looking at a EMU 1616M which should be a good interface for recording but Im not sure how it will go live. In other words will it replace an analogue mixer.

Just so you know I play a didgeridoo which means I probably wont get to fancy with the effects. I will probably use a small amount of reverb or echo most of the time just to sort of fill the sound out a bit. Other than that I may crank the reverb and do some filtering and maybe modulation and stuff. Mind you thats just how I imagine it with my limited understanding as I havent performed live with any gear before.

Aside from that there may be live and/or electronic tracks to mix. Ive seen a guy called Ganga Giri do it well. He plays didge and percussion live and his partner mucks about on her laptop with all sorts of beats.

Anyway so I guess im trying to say I want minimal gear and what I do get needs to be able to do both jobs.

If you bother to read all this and come up with a suggestion, thanks a lot.

Welcome to HRC.

Would your backing tracks be pre-sequenced or would you be sharing the gig with other players? If they are presequenced then it's easy, you just pre record them and you still only have to record yourself...

For this I would seriously look into a program called Project 5...they just released version 2 and it's great for electronic music like that plus it does have full recording and effect processing capabilities.

Project 5 v2 - service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

Do you have your own sound system or use one that belongs to the venue you play in? Do you have microphones? If not you'll need, for that type of instrument, probably a decent condensor to catch the full sound that your instrument creates.

Vautex, you can also use Project 5 V2 live as well. That is really what they were aiming for when the designed it. You can record on the the fly which in your case would be great. It will set up and playback the loop's or phrase's you create on the fly while playing live. The app was built with those kind of situations in mind. While beta testing that app I created about a 45 minute DJ set on the fly with it running pretty much flaulessly. The finished product ran even smoother then it did in beta form. They have created a piece in the software called the Groove Matrix which really adds a great bit to the live performance par to of the app.

As for Audio interface's, I guess I would recomend not to scrimp there especially if youre going to use it live. I would definately do a little research as to which one will give you the lowest latency, as live that is going to be of utmost importance.

If you have any other questions feel free to post em and we'll answer em for you. I use P5 V2 almost every day so should have almost all the answer's.
