It's been a busy week, and I've two mixes for you to listen to. The first is from an EP of a band called Viracosha that I'm mixing at the moment. They are moving from Auckland New Zealand to Melbourne Australia in a couple of weeks, so I've gotta finish the EP before then :-)

www.michelleklaessens.com...KeepsMeGood.mp3

The second Mix is a special mention of my partner Mark... he mixed this yesturday, and he's the person I learned nearly everything from. I think the song is the Ultimate Party song, and it's from a band called the Twitch who recently won our local battle of the bands, and is currently in Hong Kong competing in the World finals. I hope they win! because they are the nicest most down to earth people, and I hope they come back and record some more of their rocking songs.

I hope everyone is having an awesome day!
Tomorrow I'm doing some more recordings of the band Killt... they said they might to an album with me. That would be SOOOO cool!!
we also get to test out the new m-audio 18/14 for the first time as our main recording setup. I hope it works well...

and another one I've been mixing from Viracosha...
It's late at night (3 am in the morning) i better go to sleep now so I'll be fresh for Killt's recording.

I have to say, whoever Andy (the Viracosha drummer) decides to play with after Mike and Reza from Viracosha move to ozzy will be a very lucky band.

www.viracosha.com on the Music page there are some other songs I've recorded with them earlier this year at the Rock Factory shed. I think my mixing style has changed a little over time.lol.

Nice capture of the vox by Twitch, as well as the guitar's again. Nice midrange distortion on those guitars. The lead sounds great, just kinda slides right in. Nice in your face sound you got on that mix. Sound's very live, like their in the room here. The bottom end is awsome, especially the intro. the lead vocalist has got one of these great power voice's, fits well in the tune.

Viracosha, I love the drums again. You get a really tight sound on your kits. Everything sounds mixed very well on these 2 tracks by them. The only thing I think needs a bit is the over all level of the mix. But that might be the mp3 as well. Otherwise, guitars, bass and drums are tight and the vox cut right through without any effort.

Good luck on the Kilt stuff, cant wait to hear what they do next.

Love the intro guitar's, nice smooth delay and perfectly spaced. Very wide sounding picture on the rythm guitars. Distorted gutiars come in and fill the picture up nicely. Vocal's sit well in the mix, backing vox might use a bit of EQ to seperate them as they fade in just some tiny bits of the chorus. Not much though, just a very little bit. I think it might be the tone of the singers voice being very low though, maybe jsut brighton it up a tiny bit to bring it forward just that little bit.

Again the drums are sweet sounding, very present and tight in the mix. The bass line has a real nice thud to it as well as sounding very distnctly fingered. It stays right out there even when the distorted guitars come driving in.

Well done.

I just turned a friend on to the RockFactory stuff, he loved it and gave ya some great compliments. Funny thing was he only listened to your original DragonOrchid stuff. I told him he needed to go listen to some of your other mixes if he thought those were great. He couldn't believe you did those ona 4 trac tape. He was rather amazed shall we say.

Godd luck with the rest of the mixing.

Really? The dragonorchid stuff has not been recorded properly yet. I'm hopefully doing something about that in a few weeks time! :-)

This is the last viracosha song. I think it's not as well mixed as the others because i was really tired last night. But I'm posting it for them so that they can give me feedback (on the Rock Factory site) for what they want adjusted. Forums are actually really useful for this :-)

Man, for being not mixed right yet those guitar's are still pretty killer. I like the snap you got on the bass part on this one. It really shows up when the bass is all alone for a moment there. Vox sound pretty good as well. Was the weird slur of the guitar's at the end intentional, kinda makes for a kool ending of the tune. Drum's again are real thight and right there.

I've come to the conclusion that you like the mesa boogie sound ;-) everytime you've commented that you really like the guitar, it has been that amp. Just thought I'd let ya know!

I'am also currently really liking the Marshall jcm 800, 900 and 2000 amps. As soon as I can afford one, I'm gonna get one of those...probably the cheapest. lol.

I think the JCM's are the single most over-rated amp in the world, jeez I hate those things...they only sound good if you have a slew of processing pedals/rack units in front of it...just by itself, with it's own overdrive/gain features they suck ***.

Sorry, not trying to piss on your parade, I just sooooo hate those amps.

I think the Marshall Mode 4 is the single most overrated amp in the world.

ok... in a couple of weeks I'll make a post with "songs using a Mesa", "songs using JCM series", and "songs using marshall mode 4" and any other type of amp, if I can remember, and we can all squabble over it. lol.

We got a real nice sound out of a jcm 800 the othere day, no pedals involved at all.
When i finish the song, I'll post it ;-)
The nicest sound are when a guitarist has sat down and really fiddled with their guitar knobs for a while, and are getting the tone they like out of their guitar, any guitar amp, because they have really thought about it, and fine tuned it.

Yep, the Mesa is one of my favorites. I love that tone. It is the basis of most of my good patches in my Pod XT. That and the Soldano.

Marshall's, ya they are over rated, but if the guitar player has the patience to work with it and also invest's in some decent pickup's then they are decent sounding. I think they became a big staple in the 80's with all the hair band's. I for one was never into them myself, although I did keep a smaller Marshall untill the mid 90's as it worked for most heavy stuff, never good clean or half clean. But my Soldano was the pretty well endowed clean to dirty. I tried several Mesa's as well bu they never worked well with my guitar's so I ended up with the Soldano. Now it is just me, Frankestien and the Pod XT and I honestly dont miss the big amp's at all.

My favorite head in the 70's was a modified Fender Bassman. Man that thing wooped some backside. But it didnt do clean very well though.

Yep, my first Soldano was one of his modded ones. Basically the same mod's he was dong for Clapton at the time. Hot Rod 100 base model then tweaked by the master himself. It cost me almost a month's worth of gigging salary at the time, but it was well worth it. Now I get the same tone outa my Pod XT for about a 1/4 of what I paid for the thing then.

Bull **** : ). Amp modellers will never knock the amp.

Go the Bassman!

CS, I will combine the Pod direct sound with a mic on speaker sound and most of my bud's who play cant even tell the differance.

And no, the Pod will probably never replace a live amp. But look around, lot's of big names out there replacing huge guitar rig's with their amp modeler's so it cant be all bad.

And aside from that. If you spent half the time I have tweaking the Pod then you might be a believer. I personally dont use any of the stock patches, but I know so many out there that do, and ya they all sound alike.

Good point. I've tried the XT twice, but only with presets.

V. average.

Ya its a world of differance when ya cut the mid's down as well as the presance. All their preset's have it set so dang high it's allmost annoying. As well I think alot of the preset's were meant for single coil set up's and I rarely play single coil. Although my DiMarzio's are tapped for it I usually play in full on humbucker or parralell.

Oh man do I love my XT live. With a little tweaking you can get some great sounds out of those things. Having said that, I still want a Legacy.

Oh ya, I would love to have a handfull of head's and cab's but here it is not practical. Those who do bring in monster set ups sometimes end up using the Pod anyway.

okay...
A-B Time :-) The mixes may be a little cluttered, but that's what you get when you insist on wall of 4 Mesa boogie triple rectifier guitar tracks playing all the time. lol.

Definately the loudest I've ever mastered, thanks to Arie's tips on using Wavelab...

I just realised that these are not as good quality mp3s as the other ones I posted. Oh well. At least it won't take as long to download.

Well they sounded great here, even if the mp3 were not very high quality. I am sure they will be happy with them.
