Opinions for our next studio gear

We're planning on throwing a 'lil more money into our studio,(around $500) and have brought our choices down to a couple of different 'packages', and I wanted to get you guys' opinions on this...

#1- Is the PreSonus Eureka Pro Recoding Channel...
service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear
Cost is 499$, and they include a free 24/96 digital-out card to install in it, plus Musicians Friend gives you an MXLV63M LDC-mic, and of course there's free shipping . Oh, and they're running a special now that would give us $45 for puchasing over 500$ worth of gear from them, so basically, if we added anything onto the order around $45 it'd be free .

OR

#2- Is a combination of a few pieces gear that could be had for the same amount of $$$...

-Line 6's 2-channel Tone Lab USB interface AND all three of the guitar-sound upgrades for it . $199+$99
-Har Bal 2.0 $99
-M-Audio Keystation USB midi controller $99 for the softsynths in Sonar . Total of around $500 .

... obviously, the second of the two packages offer way more 'bang for the buck' in terms of versatillity, and user-options, but there is the arguement that one Class A channel strip is worth more than what second package offers in terms of a quality mic pre with covertion prior to the souncard .

What do y'all think ?

hmmmm having a good chanel strip (and i am a fan of Presonus, is definately a good thing to have acess too....if you're micing tons of stuff at your studio on just about every project, then i'd say that's a big hell yeah...

but the second 'package' is very tempting, the midi controler alone is something i couldn't live without (are you using your cheesemaster 2000 as a midi controler?).....and i use har-bal on EVERY project....

are you happy with your guitar tones you've been gettin'?

the line 6 is cool, but it's not something i'd consider a 'must have'.....but a MIDI controler, Harbal, and nice channel strip do fall into that catagory.

hmmm i'd say go with what you think you'll use more.

haha cheesemaster, i love that.....also i was using my tascam mixer (same as yours) as a controler as well!!! then i sold it and got my preamp and a good mic with the money....

Yes, the 'cheesmaster2000' has had a very small stint hooked up as a controler, but it's too big with it's built-in speakers and all . Also, I wasn't very interested in the 'power that is midi' at the time that it was hooked up . So, while I could do without the Keystation solution, and work with the cheesmaster, it was just an attempt to find a way to use the the allotted funds wisely .

As far as the guitar sounds go, most of what I've done lately has been ok to my ears, but there's always room for improvement, and variety is always cool... the TonePort with the upgrades offers quite a bit of variety, and Line's rep proceeds it'self, so...

The PreSonus would be used mainly for vocals, and micing acoustic guitars . Vocals being the most important instrument in a song, adds to the concept of reinforcing the front-end with this puppy... we'll be doing alot of vocals very soon, and with what we've got going for equipment now, we should be able to keep them in digital-land right out of the that nice-clean PreSonus pre .

This is quite the tuff call for us .

And of course, the HarBal .

I vote for option 2. IT does open a lot more doors to creativity. It also might presure you to learn to use software to maek up for the lack of the channels strip. I know that is my main objective here. I learned early on to use the software pluggins and keep tweaking till I got as close to analog sound as possible. And believe me it is more then possible now, especially with todays top notch pluggins.

Once you learn the deep dark secrets of things like PSP's Vintage Warmer you will realize those expensive channel strips and the like are not an absolute necessaty. Nice to have indeed, but not a must have it now kinda thing.

Just my humble opinion.
