Holy Nasty Forums, Batman!

I like forums, obviously, since I built this one, I like the community-building aspect and I belong to a couple for web developers, streaming media, etc. Since I changed my homepage to Yahoo from Excite I started participating in their HTML forum to help folks with simple questions. That forum is filled with the meanest, most angry, defensive and argumentative people I have ever met. Read this thread if you want to see what I mean:

messages.yahoo.com/bbs?.m...rd=7421137&
tid=ineedawebdesigner&sid=7421137&mid=1&thr=1&cur=1&dir=d

It started as one guy asking a simple question and advice and turned in to a total argument over nothing...whoa.

That is the typical thread I have encountered at Yahoo...I just want to say if our ever winds up like that I would sooner shut it down than let our good reputation go to hell...

Some people just suck.

Hey, I was going to check out the forum, but I get a message that says this link is not valid. Maybe direct us to which forum its in and what the subject line? Only the first part is a hyperlink, so I tried doing a copy of all of it and pasted it in the address bar, that didn't want to work either.

that is the right link, it just worked for me, but only after I made sure to paste both parts of it and removed the space created by the line break.

I hadit as one long link, but it through the page all off and made it super wide...yuk.

Ah, I missed the space when I did a copy and paste. Yeah, I am pretty glad that this place isn't like that. If it was I have a feeling that no one would ask any questions for fear of sounding stupid and getting slamed. Fortunately for me I can ask all the stupid questions that I have asked, and probably will ask some more, adn not feel as if I am a loser. At least not here anyway. This is the first real on-line post that I have ever used or stayed with for more than a day or so, and I think the reason that I like it here is because I do feel as if it really is a community where everyone is trying to help everyone else. TO be honest, I was pretty skeptical that I would get any help here when I first came here. I figured that this was a place that some company had set up to further their marketing. What I have found is quite the opposite and I must say that I am a little jealous at your selflessness in this matter. I keep wondering what YOU are getting out of it, and I guess the only answer is that you must enjoy helping people and that is a real rarity nowadays. I'm not trying to kiss your *** as much as I am just trying to be honest and let you know that I appreciate all the hard work that you do to keep this place running. Kudos to you and everyone that contributes to help this place be somewhere I look forward to checking out each day.

Thanks, Marc, I appreciate the efforts, and no, I really get nothing out of it (monetarily speaking) I have however learned a lot, made some good friends and probably got better search engine ranking for my business due to the traffic.

Actually, originally this site was just a place for me to learn web development, to try to perfect my craft...Noize and I never expected it to grow into the monster it has...but I am glad it has.

By the way, in the thread above the poster "dans_trashcan" is ME! just trying to help out, and I got trashed...really ticked me off...

Thanks again Marc, glad we won you over :-) Especially since you have come to be a very big voice in this community (the forums at least) it's folks like you and the others that make a community actually happen, all I did was build the framework.

actually, I take that back about not getting anything out of it...I have learned a heck of a lot about dynamic websites, working with databases, permissions and authentication...so I have got a butt-load of knowledge outside the music realm, whihc, on my resume makes me command a much better salary...so I guess I get that :-)

wow. . . sounds like some of my stock forums :)
I do my own websites and prefer to stick with as little scripting as possible so the people in europe who still pay by the hour are more likely to return. . .but I also have a friend who's a graphic designer and he owes me a lot of money :)

hehehe, ya some of those stock forums can get pretty brutal sometimes...

As far as scripting, yes, I keep my client-side scripting to an absolute minimum, and almost I do use is all in an exernal script file so it caches, then the user only has to download it once, not everytime the page is loaded, the only exception to that on this site is the form validation I just added to this forum so people can't add empty topics and stuff...

Holy eltoro poo poo is an absolutely wonderfull description of that thread. I feel very blessed now to have stumbled across this forum. I love the way it became the forums fault and everybody was not going to come back! Hehehehe That would fix the problem!
