I just wanted to take a poll here and find out different ways people cool there computers. Mine is really noizy and I want to change it out with something quieter. Any ideas? My specs are in my profile. My PC is also rackmounted. Not sure if i mentioned that in my profile. Thanks

My PC is rackmounted as well and I just have a couple of fans...as long as it's mounted in a solid rack it's pretty quiet, if it's out of the rack it's pretty noisy. Is yours actually mounted or just sitting on a desktop or sumthin?

It's mounted. I think I got the case from the same place that you did actually.

Hmmmm, well, if you only have a couple fans, and they are of decent quality ball bearings it shouldn't be too loud as long as you bolted it all back together like it was supposed to be...depending of course on the type of rack and how much stuff is around it in the rack.

Maybe use a fan-speed-contoller, and turn the fans down/off while tracking ?... an option I have been considering .

sometimes the little rheostats (sp?) that control speed cause more noise than the fan slowing down saves...

Mine sounds like a jet engine running at mid-throttle (2 fans on power supply, three on case, one on graphics card, one on MB chipset, and a huge sucker on the cpu). But my core temp never goes over 40 degrees C. =)

Well, WTF do you expect, of course it's that loud...you are WAY overkill on the fan cooling, if all that is really necessary you should rethink your setup.

Yeah, I know it's way overkill. The two fans on the power supply are probably needed because its a cheapo power supply (prone to overheating because it's inefficient). I'm just too lazy to tear the thing apart to take off the extra fans since I havent' done any audio recording yet, only MIDI stuff...lol.

Good topic .

Is there a 'quiet one' that someone might be able to recomend ?

Or perhaps, I should be looking replace both fans when I upgrade this winter... I'd hate to overlook the obvious in this seemingly endless battle to achieve a rock-solid compy . I want to get this one right .

There are "silent" fans advertised that will run under 20db. Really, all you need (provided you don't have a psycho graphics card and overclocked stuff) is a cpu fan, and a rear case fan.

You can also buy cpu coolers that don't require a fan, but they're HUGE! Many of the better power supplies don't have fans on them either.

We just got in one of the new Dell's here at work at it is whisper quiet. Couldn't even tell it was running. Here is a quote from the Dell website.

Quote:
The E510 features the sleek new white and silver BTX chassis, which offers great benefits like the front venting area that draws cool air through the computer to help prevent overheating. Having fewer fans in the Quiet Case technology. Chassis also helps ensure that the E510 is quiet, leaving you to enjoy your DVDs and music in peace.

I posted this in another thread recently but here it is again for those worried about noisy PC's.

Most of the noise comes from the fans and the PSU, which has a fan as well. Vibration on the case from these fans is amplified by the case itself. When building my newer studo box I tried a kit from Antec www.antec-inc.com called Noise Killer. They make them for the fans as well as the PSU and a couple other bits. They are silicon gaskets and washers and such. It made all the differance in the world on my newer PC.

They also make some quiet case's as well. The Sonata II works bvery well. I just did one up for a friend and it is the quietest thing I have heard aside from dB's rack mount.

So ya, my $0.02 worth.

wow! i never expected this too get this many posts. Thanks for the help guys. there is another computer directly below my music computer in my rack as well as a Furman that turns the music computer on. I only run my music computer by itself. It has three case fans. There is the big one in the front of the case that came with it and two regular case fans mounted inside on a rail that goes across the top of the case. I have all this and my cpu cooler which really doesn't make much noise. I think my main contributor is that fan in the front of the case. I might take a look and see if there are super dooper quiet fans on the market to replace it with. As far as I know the fans were only like $3 so if I have to spend a little more, I won't mind too much. thanks again guys.

bbbitter,
For quiet case fans, check this site: www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bi...ase%20Fans.html

Find a model you want, and find it on www.pricewatch.com for the lowest price.

Yeah, they're quite a bit more expensive than the $3/pop sleeve bearing oem case fans.
