XP re-install problems

Ok, so I tried to re-install XP on a laptop (dell inspiron 5100). I walked away while it was installing, and when I came back the computer was off. I tried turning it on, and it started to boot up, and right before it got to the windows screen, it just shut off again. I've tried it with the boot CD in, and with it out. I tried hitting F2 to get into the system settings, and I'm in for about 10 seconds before it shuts off again... it won't boot from the CD or the HD and I can't get the power to stay on long enough to do anything.... now what?

Are you running with it plugged in or just off the batteie's? Not sure what else might cause that to happen. I just re-did one of my friends desktop PC's that was doing that but it was because he was infected with a strain of the sasser worm and it would just shut it down before it even finished posting to Windows.

Ok, well now I have bigger problems.

It seems that I did not re-install, but I actually have 2 copies of windows on the laptop.

The old copy won't boot, and the new one doesn't have the eathernet connection OR the wireless card listed under network connections and I can't figure out how to get them there. The only thing there is 1394 and I don't know what that is.

I can't access the internet on the laptop! HELP!

::sigh::

I just found out earlier my studio PC suddenly won't start..well, it starts, gets into windows, then restarts...not sure why, but, it's been a couple years, prolly time for a reinstall anyway

:::heavy sigh:::

This doesn't make me looks forward to it...I guess that's what I get for ignoring my studio for over a month...

So does anyone know how to make a DOS boot CD? not a floppy, but a CD because my laptop has no floppy drive. Once again, I want to make a DOS boot CD, as in CD, NOT FLOPPY, because I don't have a floppy drive.

If you work for Dell tech support, please don't attempt to help me, because you obviously don't understand the fact that I DON'T HAVE A FRIGGIN FLOPPY DRIVE!

Makes my tiny problem with Firefox seem insignificant now. I better keep my fingers crossed as well. Been installing all the oddity synths and plugs collected over the years and just waiting for one of them to crash and burn.

Ok I think maybe I have it.

I go through this every time I do an XP re-install.

I always forget that there's an option to re-format the hard drive while you're re-installing... I did it this time so maybe it will work? I hope so.

Argh... the install worked and it wiped out the other copies of windows BUT...

I still don't have an icon for my eathernet port under network connections?!?!?! I honestly don't understand why it's not showing up? Does anyone have and ideas?

prolly cuz windows can't install it, it doesn't have the drivers, you'll have to go get the drivers from the manufacturers web site...

That's all well and good dB, but how do you propose I do that with no possible way to connect to the internet on that computer?

you are on the internet with a computer right now...I dunno, just telling you what you have to do (based on what I know from a few hundred miles away).

Right, right.

But I'm not on the computer I'm having problems with. The problem I have with the computer is that I can't connect to the internet because the LAN icon isn't appearing under the network connections control panel, therefore I can't connect the computer to the internet.

So now what?

If you go into the control panel then under system, hit the hardware tab then click the device manager button and look under network devices and it should tell ya who the mfg. is of the network device.

possible XPeriment to ease the headache...

in my rummaging for linux A/V stuff I came across this.

www.dynebolic.org/

It mostly worked on my PC but being that it's a live CD it isn't very customizable so it didn't suit my needs. I'll probably end up with audio-slack as I normally use slackware...

Tried that. No dice.

I just went out and bought a new wireless card that has a CD with it... money I didn't really want to spend but at least it's an easy fix. Hopefully.

Problem sloved.

Sorry I was getting so frustrated guys... I've been at this for about 12 hours now. It looks like I finally got it.

Sorry if I came off as a jerk. I didn't mean to.

If it was a ready-made laptop, you may be able to find out what sort of networking came with it if you contact the manufacturer so you can take your card back?
