Word clock is used as a source of synchronization. Synchronization is necessary when connecting two or more digital devices together. Basically, when you do this, only one device can be responsible for the timing of all processing among all of the devices. Otherwise, in the musical world, you will get pops and cracks in the audio, if you get it to work at all. The reason you haven't had any problems is probably because you are not connecting two digital devices. If you are using one computer with analog inputs to the sound card, the clock on the sound card is taking care of the timing. If you use SPDIF or other digital interfaces, you will need to determine which devise will be the timing source. This can get complicated when using multiple devices and the timing will have to come from a source that can communicate with all devices involved. This is a very basic explanation, but I hope it helps.
