Hiya, Up to now I have been recording in real-time only. Now comes the time to expand.
Iam using a boss br1180, and an old Korg M1.
I woiuld like to use the M1 as a midi controller, but need to look into a sampler. Can I use it this way? I want to play the samples on the M1. Can you advise what I would need to import ,play, and record samples?

Hey Ian, checked out your site (.com is down btw), you should check out my stuff, it might be to your taste.. www.myspace.com/rigsbysmith

Anyway, yeah, you can use your M1 as a MIDI controller, just turn off the local control on the M1, this'll stop the M1 sounds coming out when you press a key. The sampler will run off discs of samples or you can record them in through the audio input, depending on the model you choose it may have a digital in as well.

Connect the MIDI out from the M1 into the MIDI in on the sampler to send note info from the M1 to the sampler. The audio outs from the sampler you need to connect to the mixer or soundcard. There are more complex configurations, but that'll get you started, they'll also be a lot more detail in the sampler manual and here if you do a search.

Good luck.

Cheers for that Rigsby.
Since your reply,I've been loking into hard disc samplers.I found a emu 6400ultra on ebay. Would you suggest as a good starter model for me. So I would need to send midi out from the M1 to midi in on the sampler.
With that arrangement I understand that I can play the samples on the M1. Is that right?
Then just simple out to the multitrack?
Sounds straight forward,I just hope it is.
Thanks again..
Still trying to listen to your samples on yr page, but I'm on dial-up so it may take a while. Also thanks for the heads uip on the .com page.
Talk soon..

Yeah, i'm dial-up too, so i feel your pain.

The M1 doesn't play the samples, the sounds come from the sampler, the M1 triggers them, i think that's what you meant, but just to clarify.

Yeah, then you send it out the multi-track as audio, if you want to save the data as MIDI then M1 MIDI out will go to PC MIDI in, PC MIDI out goes to MIDI in on the sampler.

As for specific models, i'm not the best guy to ask, i don't have one right now, just used them a fair bit, haven't used a sampler for maybe two or three years though so any model info i'd have would be way out of date.
