Newbie with setup issues...all help appreciated

I am comfortable with computer hardware, settings and preferences but new to recording. I've got a problem that has me stumped.

Here's the set up: Win XP, 512 kb ram, plenty of HD space. Integrated sound
as well as MadDog 4.1 sound card.

I have recorded some guitar tracks using a basic mic in front of my amp.
It worked great into Win Sound Recorder and Kristal Sound Engine.

Here's the problem....Line in seems dead.

What I would like to do is run direct from my Yamaha DG-Stomp preamp/amp modeler into the line in, but I get no signal. I do get a weak signal going from headphone out to line in but the volume is so low as to be unusable, even with all sliders wide open.
Same thing on both the integrated sound and aftermarket card.

I also tried running from the line out on my guitar amp to line in. No worky either

I have line in selected in Windows recording preferences and anywhere else I found it, but still no go.

Any ideas? Thanks

Which sound card is your "Preferred Recording Device"? Look at your IRQ assignments also, and see if one or both of the sound cards are conflicting with each other or something else. Generally speaking, you'll not get two WDM sound cards co-operatively working with each other in the same computer. That's not to say that it's not possible, just that it's tough to do.

Also, are you using a line-out on your DG, or a digital out? If you've got a digital out, you'll not get diddly coming into the line in. The line out on the amp should be more than sufficient to drive the card's line in, tho... are you sure you're plugged into the line in of the card(s)?

As another test, try downloading Audacity

audacity.sourceforge.net/

and see if you can get audio into it. Good luck.

Thanks for getting back.
Right now the Mad Dog after market 4-channel card
is preferenced. Latest driver BTW.
No IRQ conflicts show up but just to be sure I disabled the integraded card. Still no go.
I am going out of the DG 1/4" output. I tried the headphone out and got a very quiet signal...too quiet to use even with all sliders up.
I'm definately going to the card line in.
I will check out the software you suggest
Thanks
