I have used both. Personally, if you're going for a nice and tight distorted or over-driven guitar sound, go right for the 57, it can't be beat. 609's disappointed me dearly, I bought 2 and they sucked when mic'ing my JCM3000 on a marshall 4x12. I ended up using them to mic the top and bottom of my snare.. sadly, a 57 could have done THAT better too.

If however you're going for a clean sound, I like to use a small diaphragm condensor AND a dynamic and blend the 2 together. You can get some really nicely-balanced tones.

Hope this helps a little!

Both are nice to have in the arsonal. If it comes down to one or the other by all means grab yourself a 57! I've never found a situation where I liked the sound of the 609 alone thus far. I like to use a 609 with a Senheiser 421 for guitar. Now that's a sweet mix. The 609 is a great mic to blend with another mic. For my taste it just doesn't work as a stand alone. But, you said you were looking for a "full" mic, so buy a 57 and don't even look at a 609. If you are looking for a full sound from a 609 you might want to invest in a very expensive e.q. The mic just has no meat to it.

I would dissagree. I have both and I usually prefer the sound of one e609 to one SM57. The e609 is less harsh sounding in the upper mids, and is much more forgiving about where you place it on the speaker. On snare drum, the '57 is far superior to the e609-- But the 609 is intended to be a cabinet mic, not a snare drum mic.

I like the sound of 2 SM57's on one speaker cone. Lately I've been adding the e609 in the mix as well, so I'm actually miking the guitar cab with 3 mics. You can really capture a lot of fullness by using more than one mic.

I've never really liked the 57..... I dont know why though, as I've never tried an e609, and the 57 gets the job done well. Maybe someone who has an e609 would like to trade for a couple of months?.....

I like doubling the 57 with a condenser though. My 57 and my M 147 in an XY pair in front of the cone give the best guitar tone ever IMO.

Yes PorpoiseMuffins but he said he was looking for a "FULL SOUND." from one or the other. Maybe I'm wrong but for my ears the 57 gives you a fuller sound out of the box than the 609. I like your idea of adding the 609 with two 57's. That's how I like to use it.... as a compliment to other mics.

Well, like I said, the e608 is less harsh sounding. By that I mean you're getting a fuller sound rather than just those screaming upper mids. I usually prefer the 609 to the 57, but it depends on the guitar tone coming out of the amp to begin with. I sometimes find the 57 will sound better. However, usually I find that when I mix the three mics together (2 57's and one 609), if I had to pick just one of the mics in the mix, I would go with the 609 because it generally sounds the fullest.

Interesting..... are you throwing your 57 right on the grill PorpoiseMuffins? And are you recording in a small dead room? The reason I ask is because I'm in a larger room. We haven't killed it with treatment. We have some wideband absorbers and I tuned two Helmholtz resonators for problem areas. We left the room a bit "live" as it's a very good sounding room. Just wondering if I'm getting some cancelation from the 609, because full would be the last thing I would call it. Maybe I'll try thowing up some packing blankets and closing it in a bit and see if that makes a difference. We just finished tracking guitar last night so I won't be recoding any for a while.

A few songs ago we were tracking guitar and I made a mistake that sounded so incredible! The guitarist had two amps set up. I had the one miced with a 57, and the other one on the far side of the room miced with a 609, 421 and I was using a Neumann U87 as a room mic. We tracked the 609, 421, and U87 first. Then he went to the other amp. But the idiot engineer (me) forgot to turn off the channels for the other mics. They all got laid down to tape on the same track. I started playing it back and it sounded great! The guitarist came up to listen to it and wanted to know how I got the guitar sounding so "Big". Just a lucky mistake that happend to work out.... Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.

I know at Fiddle Center they (management) always wanted us to push the 609's...better profit margin. Never tried one. I do own a 57..
