i have a mic i am trying to record vocals on "Oktava MK-319" it didn't have a instruction manual but from my research on this board... i've noticed that the two switches on the back are a "low cut and a 10 dB pad" what does these exactly do... as well as what will these do for vocals...

For the low cut button, it gives a high pass filter usually above 100Hz, as to get ride of the proximity effect. The 10dB pad lowers the output volume of the mic by 10 dB if you are recording something loud.

i am somewhat of a newbie so i am trying to get the lingo down for the terms and etc.. ok in layman's term...

Therefore,

10db lowers the output volume

and the "low cut" cuts frequencies below 100mz?

correctamondo!

also if you tap your mic, you'll hear it ring....this is due to the metal grill cover (not the mesh), when you sing or play into it and hit notes around that frequency, the mic accually resonates and exagarates it, which can lead to mixing problems later...an easy mod to that mic is to cut it off, and leave just a 'shell' with the mesh still on...it's a pretty easy mod to a good mic, and it'll doubble it's value and performance.

if ya get bored, it's not absolutely necessary, but if you crave quality, it's definately worth it.

cheers
