Need badly experts point of view

Hi all. Brand new member here, but I'm sure I've found the right place.

I've been playing for a while (almost 30 years), but I'm a newbie at home recording. I managed to compile 12 tracks, all instrumental. You can D/L them here:

mandelbrot.dazibao.free.fr/Music/index.htm

From a musical point of view, it's not better or worth than what we get on the radio. But...

Since I did that alone, and all by myself, my concern is to avoid traps and bad habits. Though I love her a lot, my girlfriend cannot tell me things like "the bass is ugly" or "too much reverb on the snare drum". And that's what I need: tell me what are the defaults you can hear, what I should avoid, how I can improve and so on.

Thanks by advance ;)

Not a single reply since yesterday. That's quite normal: musicians can spend hours speaking about effects, amps, mics and so on.

Curiously, when you speak about music, musicians become deaf...

So this post is just a reminder: all I need is a few minutes of yours to tell me where I made mistakes...

Actually, quite often critique requests get a lot of action, but, sometimes people just don't have time to listen to a bunch of music, such is my case, I do know that...sometimes a brand new members requests sometimes don't get listened to as quickly as a member that people kinda know and know what he makes. Sometimes it's happens quickly, sometimes not...

I will listen tonight or tomorrow if I get some time.

Thanks a lot, Mr dB... I know myself that days are too short with only 24 hours, and I also know it takes time to get your name wellknown on a forum.

Don't tell it to others: international forums are usually much more friendly than their french equivalents. More courtesy. I'm lucky enough to be comfortable with english, and I just use it. Would it be a confirmation of the french arrogance ;) ?

oh, the french have already confirmed their arrogance well before you said that ;-)

Actually, pretty cool, moody stuff. Seems to be pretty well mixed, though it seems thick sounding, like perhaps you are not using the stereo field and not EQing instruments to live in their own sonic space.

I think this article may help you a lot if those comments sound like they resemble you www.homerecordingconnecti...tory&id=154

Musically, quite pleasing stuff.

Yep, the article will help ! I admit that I EQ the tracks more one by one than to set them in a given spectrum. That's something I have to work on.

One of my auto-comment is that I usually put tons of reverb and echo: this can only lead to something messy, where the instruments are all jammed (?)

Thanks for the appreciation for the musical side ;)

ok took a listen to Au bar des hybrides.
this is a good track. very nice mood to song. my only issue was I am having a hard time hearing the drums, especially the kick drum. of course this could be the effect you are going for so I dunno. I'm more of a rock music type so sorry I couldn't critique the mix better. guitars sound good though.

Hi Stupe !

Yes it's chinese on the top, but it has nothing to see with music, and it would be too long a story to tell you why.

I know that the drums are the weak part of the track... They were made with what I have: Steinberg LM4! I can tell you I had a hard time trying to make that sound "rock". Knowing it was made only with the mouse, and that I never played drums, well... I only hope I'll have the opportunity to play that on stage with some folks and real instruments: it was my first and last attempt to record rock style music with VST stuff!

i usually go by the rule that if you can hear the reverb then you've got too much....reverb adds depth to a mix, by pushing the track back. not volume wise, but its kinda like how a painter can paint a 2D picture of a road gooin' into the sunset, and it looks like it has depth....reverb does that with sound. you can push things back...this is why when you hear an echo fading, it sound's like the sound is drifting out into space.
