If I mixdown to WAV and then convert to MP3, can someone then convert that MP3 to WAV and it's the same as the original WAV? If not, what's the difference?

Aug 10, 2005 08:32 am Yeah, you convert it back, but it won't be the same. mp3 is compression, with database being lost int he process, once data is lost, there is no getting it back.
Aug 10, 2005 08:50 am Oh yeah, I knew that.
Well, reason I asked is this guy took an mp3 of mine off the web and converted to WAV and then he was saying no clipping, everything is groovy (I had asked about sound) and I'm thinking... hmmm... he's not looking at the original WAV but a converted WAV.
But yeah, I knew that. Sorry.
Aug 10, 2005 08:54 am I have heard of that being a common cheating technique in "mastering" of taking the mixdown, making it mp3 and back cuz it's the easy way to fix dynamics problems and stuff, mostly because mp3 removes the extreme highs and lows and reduces the dynamics, and therefore the associated problems.
