Looking to replace my old DAT machine and am vascillating between the Edirol R-1 and the Marantz PMD660 for music recordings out in the field.
Which would you choose and why?
TIA

Aug 02, 2005 10:29 pm I'm not sure what your goals are in using these units so its a little tough to answer that question. If it were for my use I would go with the Marantz for the XLR mic inputs and the phantom power. That would be a nice unit for when I'm on video shoots. Now what I actually use is a Sony Mini-disc recorder. They have a nice high quality recording and they fit in my pocket. Plus it only set me back $50 at a local pawn shop.

I travel around the world to study music, rugged places like West Africa, Brazil, etc. where lightweight portability is of utmost importance. High quality sound is also essential in that our goal as an ethnomusicologist is to preserve and archive musical cultures that may or may not become extinct.
