my drummer got a sure mic kit with 57s for all the toms and snare, from what i can tell they suck, and are quite colored. my sm81 over heads capture the true sound of the kit WAY better. i dont think its the set b/c its a custom OC kit $$$$. Is it the mics or me?

Possibly Both. While SM57s are kind of in industry standard for close micing, that doesn't mean you have to use em. It all boils down to the first rule of music, if it sounds good it is good.

They have been used on the US Presidential Podium for 30 years... however being dynamics they have a frequency response of 40hz-15khz which make them pretty much useless as overheads.

I have used SM57's for everything at one time or another...are they the best? no...are they reliable, affordable and decent sounding, yes. They are colored, they are made for thr road, sturdy and trusty...in the studio they work great, I love them on snares, but there are better choices for the anal-retentive musician with money to burn.

Depends on the sound you're after, i've had good results with 57s as OHs, but that fit the project, and i quite like them under the snare.

It's Shure btw ..sorry, but 'sure' just annoys me for some reason.

every couple months a sm 57 sm 58 question comes up.
I love my 57, its 10 years old and sounds as good as the day i bought it. Its not the best out there for any application, but its the best for every application when youre on a budget and doing music at home for a hobbie.

Never had a problem with a 57. On drums, I like one on the top head, and one on the snares. Mix 'em together and it's superb. As overheads, I do have doubts. I'd use the Shure 81's as overheads, but keep the 57's on the heads. The 57's just don't have the same "sizzle" for the cymbals.
The 57 is also a fabulous vocal mic for certain singers (based on the timbre of the singer's voice).

A very cool MIC indeed.

I always use the opportunity when it arises to say that if you have a 58, you can make it sound REAL close to a 57 by simply unscrewing the grille and positioning a little further away from the sourcee to avoid the use of the proximity effect kicking in.

Even further stretching a tight budget - 2 MIC's for the price of one...kinda!

But, if in doubt - try it out. It sure as hell worked for me and under a road test with a Marshall and a 58 (unscrewed) nobody knew it wasnt a 57!!!!

I've tried quite a few mics in the same price range on both snare and toms and the SM57 has beat them all, hands down.
