gating toms

whats a good way for me to get more isolation on the toms so when i EQ them the rest of the leakage from the set doesnt get all messy...cause when i get awesome toms...the rest of the kit turns to mush cause the EQ changes are reflected in the tom tracks and the cymbals get so harsh...and grrr....

I'm guessing you are mixing in Cubase or software like that. Just slap a gate on there. Look at the volume level meters on the gate vst and take notice when the tom is hit how it spikes up. Bring the threshold down below that peak and give it space so it won't cut off tom hits that are weaker. There you go! You have gated everything else. You might have to go back and forth adjusting it through the song to make sure you aren't cutting out any tom hits. Hope this helps!

no way!!!! i don't trust gates....i manually 'slip edit' my toms, meaning i fade in right before the toms hit, then i fade out and cut. i hafta go thought the whole song and cut out every individual hit, and not just in an 'exact' way, but in a 'musical way' like on "they don't" in my profile, when he rides the third tom, i accually have the fourth (floor)tom gooin' right along with it....use your ears and not your eyes, and cut out all unwanted parts from the tom tracks.

peace

I used to do that also but it became an all day process of getting the volume envelopes off and on on every hit. Sure you might need to do that for some hits to even it out volume wise with other hits. Putting a gate on it makes it easier for me.

gating doesnt seem to work for me, because then the sound of the tom isnt...as natural as id like it to be...ive messed with the hold setting, but it doesnt work for me....but you know what? i actually did that manual cutting stuff before on a band i did last week, and it worked, i was just scared i wasnt doing a good enough job...and maybe spoiling the tom tracks

I am not a big fan of gating myself...when the gate is closed it's great, but as soon as the gate opens all the sound comes in, not just the sound that opened the gate...so if set to hard it can lead to really weird sounds. That said, lots of people use them, so what the hell do I know...
