Last week I got to see a few bands perform at a local dive, and the singer in one band used a telelphone-mic in one of their songs... actually looked like a telephone plugged into the PA ! I couldn't stick around to ask him about how they wired it, so I thought maybe you guys may know... is this merely a matter of wiring a mic cable to the mic in the phone ?
It sounded great live on stage... sounded like a phone !(go figure) heh He used it within the context of a song as well, bouncing back and forth between the phone-mic(conversation), and the vox-mic(his thoughts)... so it was particularly effective,heh... pun intended .: )
Anybody ever use a phone in the studio ?... to record, that is .

Jun 08, 2005 04:46 pm i have a sweet cable that plugs into my cell phones "headset" TRS jack "tiny" that goes to 1/8" TRS cabel which i can pull the sound and go right into a preamp or what ever, i only use the tip and sleeve for the mic part, and the ring (recieving) on the cabel i like it's not even there, so it works well. i have also plugged the headset and threw a 57 right on it and wrapped it up in a thick blanket (cuz you need TONS of gain), but that was before i got my special adaptor cable.

Jun 08, 2005 04:59 pm I'm wondering if it was an actual phone-mic wired to an XLR cable, or if they actually disected a mics guts to fit in the phone, and then eq'd it ?
It was deffinately plugged into the board .
Jun 08, 2005 05:23 pm there was a thread about that at Gearslutz not too long ago, and it's a bit more complicated than it seems....ofcourse, those guys like to complicate things....lemme see if i can dig it up.

Jun 09, 2005 11:34 am You can also use EQ to replicate the telephone sound.

Jun 09, 2005 11:39 am I saw a guy locally here use a styrofoam cup with a hole in the bottom, where the mic gets put (i'm thinking a 57, due to it's thin diameter) for the telephone sound. I'd think that with creative EQ (there's hints on the net) you could get a real close sound.
Jun 09, 2005 11:43 am cutting the hi and low end leaving only the mids gives a good low-quality, AM sort of sound that might work...

Jun 09, 2005 01:32 pm its pretty easy with old british phones, you can just wire a jack on em. or, a lot of djs there wire them up to use as a 'headphone' cos the sound of them really cuts through whatever theyre playing out front...

Jun 09, 2005 06:50 pm I can replicate the sound, even the "phone-booth" that one might be in... I just want an actual telephone-mic for the studio... it seems as though it would've been easy enough to procure, and novel enough to try .
