ok i'm running into issues with my project!! i've wasted loadsa time due to the simple fact i didn't name my audio files as soon as they were recorded....countless importing and exporting and searching for tracks has slowed my workflow down by weeks!! no joke. i'm workin' with 37 tracks of audio and it's sickening how twisted and confusing this can get...so yeah rule number one: NAME ALL YOUR TRACKS!! "not just guitar 1" and "vocal take three" be spicific! "dist guitar 57" and "verse 1&2" are much easier to find and work with....i've overlaped a few .wav's on my whole ALBUM track so when i bounce the individual song, it's always a ***** figurin' out what's where....ugh yeah it's been a huge headache

rule number 2, sort out your audio on a per project basis, each song should have it's own folder, complete with your host app file, all your audio, any notes, and presets. you should be able to burn one folder to cd and take that to any similar studio setup and have everything you need. Cakewalk has a really cool "bundle" feature that zips all this up.

just thought i'd share, cuz it's hindering my speed and efficantcy.

Wyd,

Can't agree more. Big problems when you get to rotating 5 or 6 groups in and out and they are all taking a while to compile a complete album. I went as far as to create a databass in MS Access to keep track of tracks, processes to each track, to-do's, etc. I also create an "archive projects' file to keep older itterations of mix and master projects and test projects. It can become a real problem.

Now where was I?

Good advice WYD! I'm semi organized. Each song has it's own folder and most of the time I name each track descriptivley and each version of a song gets it's own folder inside the first. I never delete earlier session versions so I can go all the way back if I need too. All of my collabs go into a collab folder under the original artist name etc. :)

I concur after losing all my files 2 weeks ago for the gig I done. I did name each track properly but NOW (BEFORE) I record a note in any song, I set up all my tracks with the PROPER descriptive names that way when Cubase records it and it goes into the "pool" it'll be named properly automatically i.e. Intro Vocals.wav etc

But, a good shout. I also love cubase Sx for the wee mini notepad you get for eveyr track. I use that as a scrible pad for BPM, type of amp, even gain setting on preamp and every other minute detail ye can imagine...VERY handy - dunno if other apps have it but another reason to love Cubase.

Cheers

Coco.

yeah sonar's got that too (although i've never used it) i learnd this due to the fact i didn't track them at my place...the roland recorder (2480) that i tracked on, DID have this feature but we didn't start implimenting it until about half way through.....AND the tracks that are named some (most) are named improperly....ie: drums OH L-R, whish is really OH R, which has become OH L because the band choose to mix from the audiences perspective!!!! that's just one example lol anyway yeah, my next project, i'm gonna be a bit more precise.

good times
