Yes there is. I will let dB or someone give you a better description of how it works.

no, there isn't...well, thats the short easy answer, the long answer is that you can but it's expensive and difficult...

There are ways to make it a pain in the ***, but eh, no easy cheap way to protect it...if you don't want it downloaded, don't put it on the net...

So what do the companies use that distribute your MP3's on line use then?

They either only publish small snippets to preview songs, or they also run very large, very expensive streaming servers to manage caching and downloading...Things like RealServer or Windows Media Server can cost thousands of dollars, even tens of thousands, to license depending on your needs.

Ok well i want people to preview the full MP3, I have wimpy player aswell, but I dont want to use this.
Id rather just have a link to the MP3...

So would wimpy player make it harder to rip MP3's?
Do you know any software that could make it harder?

Thaks for the help

The wimpy player was a function to disable downloading which appears to work from my usage...I would use that at HRC, but I can't get it's XML functions to work and support for it sucks ***.

I use Wimpy and found it to be fine.

Tho, I tend to agree - the support for the app is rubbish and the skinning machine doesnt work all that well...from my memory.

The ting is, if someone truly wants to get the MP3, they will. But, if you use Wimpy etc, you make it that bit harder. Its all down to what you're trying to do...there are options as dB says but you'd need to be running a big commercial venture to justify such expenditure.

Most average users wouldnt know to search cache's and take apart Flash embedded songs anyway...

So can I just use windows media to encode teh files and turn on thr protection atributes when coverting the MP3?

As long as the person cant get it from thier temp directory that would suit me for now

Yeah, Wimpy is fine for static links or XML feeds, I run into problems when I try to add database driven dynamic XML feeds to it...then the author tells me I can do it, but never tells me how...

Topman, I dunno if that will work or not...try it. Then report back :-) I still believe it would cache, it would just be labelled as copyrighted.

Why don't you just use www.purevolume.com or www.myspace.com. They stream songs and they are free. One could always record the incoming streaming audio if they really wanted to, but you can do that with any streaming media regardless of what service you use.

yeah, I was going to suggest myspace.com if you are looking to do something like that. Most of the time though I just post the mp3 version anymore on my website. I am an indie artist doing everything on my own and I find that I get more interest in my tunes if folks can cart them around on their Ipods or mp3 players now days. :) Goodluck

Ok im on myspace and stuff..

let me explain why i need to have a direct link to music..

I have just started a record label ,
we have a catalogue section on website...

It would look realy unprofesional to have have the link to MP3 go to another site...

I dont want to use wimpy player either since it complicates things to much and interferes with the site...

So I was looking to just have a link to the song but also protecting the file as much as I could

Bear in mind the majority of people will be corparations looking for music..

Any sugestions from this angle?

Apreciate this help

There is, but for what you want it requires a server capable of ensuring the files are protected. This costs but it depends on how much you need it - If you copyright yer stuff...its copyrighted - tis yours anyways...so, ye'd be fine for a large scale theft.

There is no easy way...other than say Wimpy, or lofi versions etc.

Topman, if someone is going to use a song that belongs to and is copywriten by you or someone on your label in an advert. I would hope to god they arent stupid enough to do it without permision or paying for it.

If that happens you then can sue them for copywrite infringment. Simple as that. There are laws that protect those who's music has been stolin. And like I said, any advertisment agency worth its salt has brains enough to want to avoid a lawsuit.
