Total beginner-starting from scratch

Hi,

I posted this forum quite awhile back about wanting to start home recording, but due to financial issues I put this project on hold until now.

Basically I know almost nothing about home recording and am literally starting from scratch. I have to get a computer and everything.

My goal is to use the equipment to start composing and recording demos for a solo project. I sing, play the piano and sometimes saxophone, and I would obviously want to record for these instruments, and also probably add things like drum beats and other instruments.

First things first, I want to figure out what basic system requirements I would need so that I can start looking for a computer.

I also desire to experiment with various keyboard sounds and am looking to purchase a keyboard to combine with the home studio, ideally one that includes a sequencer and is fairly user-friendly.

I have met with a musician friend who does this type of recording in his home. He is a guitar player and basically he all uses is an old version of Cubase with a sequencer. He recommended I get a mobile interface, like the MobilePre USB from m-audio.

If you have any other suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Jane

Well, I'll help you with your first step and that is getting a computer! First things first you know.

I consult people on their computer equipment daily because that is what I do for a living. Others here also work in the IT field. When it comes to recording, this is all that really can be said: What can you afford? Basically, we can start from there and give suggestions to what to get you. Take in mind, I have learned by trying to cut corners here and there, you sometimes don't get the results you want. Given, recording equipment and computer equipment has came down over the years. You get more for your dollar (wish the same for gas!). If you want, I can quote you some prices on ranges of different systems, going from lowest to the highest priced that I build, just drop me an email [email protected] Course, other people here will do the same what they have built themselves or store bought and had good results.

I just posted some ideas on another thread, www.homerecordingconnecti...=7767&frm=5

it's the 'ready to buy pc, soundcard, etc' one.

I hope that worked. anyway, it dealt with some of the same issues you'll be getting into. you could get by very well with a computer like the one mentioned in that thread, and probably much less (others here do). It makes a difference if you are inclined to build one yourself, or if you'd rather just purchase one. Both have their merits, and pitfalls.
