anyone know of a good (free) map editor for html. I'm using an old dreamweaver copy that hacks up my code, just to draw the points in a map. I looked through the normal places, and didn't run across anything that looked promising.

Thanks.

For image mapping? The Gimp does that. www.gimp.org/

Wow, that's cool.

But no, i meant a html image map editor, like in a web page, when there's a section on a map that's clickable, and each seperate section links to a different file. I'm looking for an editor that will let me put those points in and make the links.

I'm gonna try out the gimp though, i do a lot of graphics work at work, so another tool in my arsenal won't be turned down =)

Image maps are a drag...search engine bots can't follow then and they are a hassle to create sometimes...I would sooner dice up the image into pieces and link each piece and table it back together :-)

On the occassions I have had to make one DreamWeavers feature to do it works well, even in the early versions.

I have a map that has the world on it, and different countries / areas will bring up different company names that distribute there. I'm not too inspired to have it spidered, maybe i'll turn off the bots for those pages. I ended up using dreamweaver in a small file that only had the map, then copied the map sections over to my real file. It works.

Otherwise, dreamweaver doesn't like the php code in the file, and puts page breaks every so often.

So I guess I'll live with it.

Yeah, that how I do it, I make JUST the image map then copy that into my code. I use DW MX2004 and it does great with PHP code...that said, I only work in code view, the only time I enter the drag n drop view is to make that rare image map.

"turn off bots"...hahahahahahaha, good one...kinda like a "sealed criminal record"...hahahahahahahaha...bots will do whatever the hell they wanna do, using the robots.txt or robots tags will only stop the bots that follow the rules...

oh, well, no bother. Just address pages, no biggie.

I'm using 1.2 (i think), so it doesn't know what to make of php.

Thanks.

ah, yeah, 1.2 perhaps does not work with PHP too well, I haven't used that one in a long time...

I just heard about a really cool free php editor, but I forgot the name, I'll have a snoop around an old forum I know about and see if I can find it again...

Hooray!

Finally found one that does what I expected:

www.carlosag.net/Tools/XMap/Default.aspx

Load up an image, drop in the shapes you want, click-drag the shapes to suit, and the proggie makes the map html coords at the bottom.

Just swipe/CTRL-C the text and drop it in your html page, and viola!

It would be nice if it would open the html file and make the changes right there in it, but I can't complain for a free program !

* edit * jeesh, only took me 3 years to fine one =)

heh heh, well, lightly looking anyway.

Around 1 or 2 times a year I need to make map updates.

So everytime I make updates, I do a quick search on the ole internet, to see if one turns up that I like.

This time it hit.

I absolutely LOVE the internet (mostly) =)
