personally, I think you have a pretty nice setup, I would just keep saving money until an obvious point of weakness presents itself.

dB is correct...Hip hop deal in with alot of MIDI. So you can never have enough MIDI related gear for that genre...

But I am doing as dB is, saving untill a weakness presents itself...except I just started and I do have my weaknesses but I am currently not heavy into work. Its been down for about a month or so...

If you're getting good sounding recordings then you're gear's good and you're good. That's putting it pretty simply, but if you can get good sound from your gear then you don't need to worry about impressing someone, that's impressive enough, and knowledge is way more important than gear IMO anyway. To be honest, seems like his set-up may be a bit of a cut above yours, but what's wrong with that? I don't see it as a reason to feel inferior. If he down-talks you then he's rude frankly, especially if he's using your space.

All that said, a compressor might be a good next buy, especially for hip-hop, a lot of compression tends to be used on vocals in hip hop, and you could also beef up some of your beats, especially if you're into an old school sound.

Hope everything turns out well.

Robert,

I hear a few different questions going on here. And some of them are kinda muddy, intertwined.

As far as what people are going to say, well, what they say. There is little to influence that. One drummer I recorded slammed my studio for months because he was a poor performer and felt he had to hide that. I didn't work for him. People can hear. Maybe you don't want to invite the fox into the hen house. If this is a friend and truely a mutualy benificial relationship, this person will have a motivation to give you what he can to help you become better at what you do, and vice versa.

As far as the hip hop sceen goes, I see a ton of folks coming into where I sold equipment all with the same laundry list. Insta-studio mentality. Hook it up and let it make you money. There is a real paradym here; They all look for those items which equate to a 'hip hop' studio. That may be a little difficult to counter. Your buddy pretty much has the accepted 'starter kit' as it where.

I guess if you want to compete with all of that a Blue mic would probably be a good 'stage effect'. The performer will be looking right at what he is singing into, and if he is part of the hip hop 'click' he will probably notice the Blue as a sign of valid studio. Beyond that if your equipment is all nicely staged and impressive looking they probably won'd really know what they are looking at.
