V-amp = drum tuner?

UInique question, and I am not even sure anyone has tried this BUT... the V-amp has a built in tuner, which I am assuming senses frequencies. So, theoretically, If I hook a drum mic up to it, could it tell me what note my drum is playing? HmMmMm

Not quite...its only set to run at line level for guitars, plugged straight in via a 1/4 jack so that wouldnt work...it has no mic on it. Any mic you plugged in wouldnt be at line level...

I've become a big fan of Gtune from JHC software. Although I'm not sure how it would do with drums since the sound is so short...it'd register but I"m not sure if it would show the value long enough for you to tell what the pitch is.

I think that OldDog knows of another software tuner, and I think that it holds the pitch value until you strike another note if you set it a certain way. I think its called AP Tuner.

I saw a drum tuner for like $50 in the MF catalog, it said that it measured tympanic pressure instead of pitch to make sure that the head is at the right tension...I"m not a drummer so that could just be a load of crap for all I know. Just passing on a couple of options.

That drum tuner works perfect for its purpose, but it does not help with adjusting pitch. It is designed to enable you to adjust each individual lug so the head is of equal tension all the way around.

Ah, I see. I don't know of a tuner other than a strobe tuner that can react and display pitch fast enough to tell you what pitch a percussive sound is. GTune is very fast but as soon as the pitch is gone, so is the readout.

lol. I have a newfound non-respect for the majority of the drummers I have had the opportunity to talk to. But that is another subject in itself. it envolves me, being flamed for suggesting that I dont need to count beats to keep time. BAH. Lack of talent on their part, if you ask me. but anywho.. yes, drummers understand pitch. especially if they have been playing guitar for two months longer than they have drums. :D

Some of us drummers can detect when a guitarist and bassist is out of tune more often than not because we don't get so wrapped up in the oooooooohhhhhhhh I LOOOOOVEEE my guiiiiiiiiiitar and amp sound soooooooo much. LOL ;-)

And yes you guitar players wouldn't understand the complexities and nuances of tune a living instrument (not relying on electronic gizmos)

Lost for words with all to say.

Oh gosh, the many times I have seen the guitar player going crazy with that look on his face of pleasure of a great sound. Just want to smack the crap out of him and tell him to learn how to read his $20 tuner.

ooooooooohhhhhhhh I LOOOOOVEEE my guiiiiitar and amp sound sooooo much.

That's funny!

Oh yeah, I've totally found a new reaspect for the drummer population, after trying to tune the tubs we aquired... tricky stuff for sure !

And yeah, that was pretty funny Kaos62 ! lol

ive been playing drums all my life and picked up guitar 4 years ago... at practices, i always tell my guitarists that their out of tune cuz it bugs the hell out of me... the best two ways ive found to tune drums are by using the Evans Torque Key and by using Drum Tuner (out of musiciansfriend). the Drum tuner measures the timpanic pressure when it's set on the middle of the head. it actually tells you what note its tuned to.

using both is the best way though. the key keeps all the lugs evenly tightend so the the tone doesnt change over a long period of time when the head is hit while the drum tuner tells what note its at.

one other way i just now remembered is to use percussive harmonics. you can use a guitar tuner for this (this works but i recomend the other two first). (you must have the lugs evenly tightend before adjusting them for this tuning also) hold down one head and hit the one thats not held down right in the middle. hook ur mic up to the tuner and, yes, you will get a note.
