New Gear

I just got some new gear today for recording vocals.
I got a Presonus TubePre and a dbx 266XL Compressor.
They sound amazing! Does anyone have any thoughts on these two pieces? I read alot of reviews about the dbx Compressor that say it's cool for vocals and guitar but not for bass, but I am happy with it so far.

I use the TubePre and have had nothing but good results with it. In fact, I'm working on an indie movie and the guys I'm working with have this stupid expensive Cannon digital video camera and I'm using the Presonus tubepre for a mic preamp and bypassing the cameras preamp. All of that money and the cameras on board preamp actually sound pretty bad.

I use a 266 and have used it for vocals, guitar, bass, full front-of-house PA at gigs...damn near everything and it's worked well.

i have a tubepre and it is ok. does not really sound much different than the pres on my mackie board. but it has a phase reversal that my board does not have. also the pad works pretty well. The sound is just ok. it can distort very easily which I do on purpose sometimes for effects.

on the other hand i have what i would consider my first and only "nice" preamp to date Groove Tubes "the brick" which blows away to tubepre and my mackie tenfold. it has no pad or extra gain. just one knob of tube gain and fabulous sound.

With my tax returns i am getting service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear mmmmmmmmmmmmm new gear.

josh... if you want a nice condenser mic and are a fan of the real tube sound from your brick, you should check out the rode ntk tube mic....

My buddy has the NTK and it does sound nice on alot of sources but it has a fixed cardioid pattern which is not what I'm looking for at this point.

Out the 3 different AT 40 series i have heard, I like them all. I want the 4050 because it has cardiod, figure 8 and omni selectable patterns.

Cardioid for guitars, vocals.

Omni for drum room sounds.

Figure 8 for MS side micing.
