Mixer Luggage

I don't think this topic should but in "gear gab" since it's not really gear, but anyway, I'm trying to make a case for my mixer so it doesn't get damaged during transport. I was going to go to the goodwill store and get a hard case luggage bag and put some padding on the inside. Is there any fabric you would recommend to pad it with?

I was thinking egg crate foam, but i think that stuff flakes off after a few months and could get inside the mixer. thin pillows maybe? I guess I'd just like to hear you suggestions. Peace out.

I would go to your local home improvement store and buy some trash bags and expandable foam. Set the mixer in the case, put trash bags around it with the opening facing up, the fill each one with the foam and let it expand, see how higt it fills in a few minutes, put more in if necessary.

You will then have nice, custom fit peices of foam to travel with.

Two tips:

1- squirt only little bits in at first, that stuff expands A LOT

2- seal the tops of the bags very, very well.

those are the kinda tricks ya learn from ur grandpa and such, I remember when I was little, I got a small bolt!! haha up my nose.. and it wouldn't get out... so in the hospital they couldn't get it out either... my grandpa blowed some pepper in my face and I sneezed and out it was... yeah...

hehehe, sounds like a Homer Simpson moment you had there presley :-)

When I was a machinist (about 8 years of my life) we used to pack parts in crates for shipment with the ol' expandable foam/trash bag trick...I have always remembered it, very cool and pretty inexpensive...

good idea db...so it'll just come out of the bag once it hardens? does this stuff flake over time? and should I make a mold to go over the dials and knobs or is that kind of risky?

yeah, it will likely flake a little over time, which is why you have it in trashbags...then the flakes won't get into anything.
Make the molds in several pieces, not one big one. And no, I don't think I would do oen over the knobs, tho it may not hurt...

Presley, that's an awesome story ! Why do kids put stuff up their nose sooo much ?!? My buds little girl put a piece of styrofoam up her nose, and when mom took her to the doc to find out why her breath was so horrible, they found and pulled-out what at the time looked like a maggot, and everyone freaked out 'til they seen it was just a piece of styrofoam... poor Breanna . lol

On topic, though...
I just built a rack... cost was $55, and it most-solidly holds the ub2442, BBE, DBX, a bass-pre, a head phone amp, and a dual-cassette-recorder . The coolest part of it, was how easy it was to build : Took a pre-moulded/heavy-duty bin("Smart Bin"), cut 1x4s to fit inside it, and screwed eye-bolts through the sides into the wood, and everything lined-up perfectly... equipment racked right to the wood . The top/cover converts to a table with the help of a keyboard-stand . It took all of 30 minutes to build, and blows-away much of the pre-made stuff . Even though it's not deep enough for my power amp, or computer-rack... y'a canny whack it !

I'll try to get some pics up here pretty soon .

i gotcha db. I thought you would take the mold out of the bag once it dried, but I'll definately check it out.

On the safe side I would use 2 just because trash bags are not the most high tech so that they'd be completely sealed...
