what is the best way to hook up a preamp to a combo amp with an mutli effects processor in the loop?

ah shoot... this one's gonna be a few days. my friend told me to ask that question and now i have to wait till monday to se him.

I'd go instrument into preamp, preamp out into preamp in on amp (if it has one) effects out from amp (again if it has one) to effects unit, effects unit out to effects loop return, and viola
