Mouth Noises in Recording.....what do I gotta do?

Hey I have a particular artist that I record (rap) that has a deeper voice with a lip smacking problem. My setup includes a focusrite platinum pro preamp with a Blue Baby Bottle mic, we have a standard black nylon wind filter on the mic and have not had problems with plosives just lip smacks. Is there some particular mic placement strategies I can implement to reduce this? Is there something the vocalist can do to reduce this? Is there a way to edit lip smacks out in editing? I tried silencing the lip smacks while mixing but some of them were in the middle of words and couldn't be edited out. If you have any suggestions to reduce or eliminate my problem I would appreciate any input.

Thanks
C

Seems like your real close to the mic....Maybe turn the gain up on your pre-amp and back up a few feet.

You could experiment with mic placement, by having the sweetspot of the mic not directly pointed at your mouth.

You may also want to try a De-Esser?

Maybe even installing sound dampening foam?

I usually just manually mute all that...

Most of the lip smacks are after the words like...stop, drop, lock, rap, smack...and so on...I was able to use the wave form editor to get the smacks out but it was a very tedious long task, hopefully I can play around with mic placement to eliminate the problem in future tracking, I will also be sure to give him water and lip balm...thanks for the input, I appreciate anymore that you have..

Yeah, I pretty much use the wav editor to do that, but I usually only have like 2-3 a verse.

I agree with Illbizzel, maybe just back your mc off the mic a little bit.

I'd back the mic off a bit, and leave the lip smacks. Chalk it up to individual style.

hi mate, just joined this, my first forum... this is the first message i've read!
...mic placement - aiming the mic down at the vocalist's mouth de-emphasizes lip smacks, breaths, sniffs, and nasal quality, though thins out the sound quality somewhat.
Aiming the mic up at the mouth fill's out a thin sound, though accentuates these mouth noises.
as someone said before, a de-esser could be handy.
Hope this helps.......g
