video cards are not that expensive, and most audio applications today have pretty graphically intense interfaces, so I would say not to get a top of the line graphics card, but don't totally cheap out on it either, 64-128 MB AGP card would good.

At least 7,200 RPM drives, two if you can, one for system and apps, one for audio, the most RAM you can afford, 1GB being great.

Sound cards...ESI, Echo and M-Audio are great manufacturers. I have had one of each at one time or another, I like ESI's driver set the best.

For hard drive, I'd prefer at least one hard drive of at least 80 gig. You can get by with less, and certainly do with more. I have an M-audio, and I can vouch for them as well. You may want to get a SBLive type of "stock" soundcard as well, if you are going to be listening on computer speakers. It can also serve for basic recording, but if you want to get serious about it, you will be much happier with one of the ones db mentioned, or something similar.

You'll prolly want to start out with a decent set of computer speakers, but eventually you may want to upgrade to mointors (I've done lots and lots of work I my computer speakers - I would try and find a set that comes with a sub woofer).

At minimum a CD drive that can write to CD, so you can share your music with friends or pop it in the stereo to see how it sounds there.
