I have sound comming out of Cubase using MIDI!
Yes the old fart has traversed the GodBox nymisis and created actual sound from the monster.
Now the endless questions begin. I will be kind and only start with the most important to me.
VST instruments are Zero latency per my test...very nice! XG and XS emulated via windows GM synth are like really Slllooooowwwww in responding. Is this normal test?... or do I have that hosed up? I got my good ole Juno-106 hooked up as a midi controller.
The rest of the questions can hold until I do more research and can ask better questions....I hope.

Feb 17, 2005 09:07 am Congrats...I use midi for 2 things only:
to design my drum tracks
to design piano tracks
Thats it! And aye, I feel it for ya man - when you eventually get the beast working to give ye some audible sound (just to be sent back "out" the PC to the Drum Machine/Keyboard/etc) it is sweet!!!
All the best to ye..

Feb 17, 2005 12:10 pm Good news Walt. Best thing that ever happened to me in terms of MIDI was realising that i could improvise something over a click and then copy it note by note as a MIDI track (taking a bar or four at a time and working it out), which gives me a score of what i played. Great stuff.

Feb 17, 2005 11:09 pm Ya guys, I'm entirely geeked. Possibilities are running rampid through ole Wallies little head. A whole new dimension is now opening up here at the little studio. Gotta get my keyboard chops back a little however. Gad, that's three instruments I have to try to keep up to. Yikes!

Feb 18, 2005 08:13 am VST's arent alawyas Zero latencey! i sometimes switch to my Audigy (Craeative ASIO) drivers just so i dont have to use Headphones, If i dont adjust the sample rate i get a latency.
I Love MIDI! SO MANY options :)
looking foward to hearing some Midi through you next song :)
Feb 18, 2005 08:14 am DirectX handles the latency issues better than VST, VST, as I recall, has no latency correction at all, which is why they are so much less resource intensive, and why they operate better in a DirectX wrapper.
Feb 18, 2005 09:59 am Good on ya Walt! I ain't using it lately 'cause I'm controllerless, but with the new job, I hope to afford a decent one soon.
MIDI is great for composing, that's what I've used it for. Know some guys that use it to the extreme, so much so that you wouldn't even be able to tell their work from the 'real' thing.

Feb 18, 2005 12:08 pm i feel ya walt, that feeling of "i could do anything" is overwhelming at first, ya need to educate yourself on programming synths and samplers and loop players now, don't worry it's not as intiminating as you'd think, once you get comfy with them, you're workflow will do just that, flow.

Feb 18, 2005 02:28 pm way to go walt. i have fun with the few ways in which i can get midi to work for me. imma pay close attention to this thread to see what else i can learn as you learn.
ha ha great title near your avatar, walt
Feb 18, 2005 02:36 pm Noize is one of those "extreme" users Waldo is referring to...he can make all his gear talk to gear on the other side of the room, I dunno how a guy can keep track of all that crap. For me, MIDI is for drums, background synths, and good yucks for me and my 6 year old daughter to write music with.

Feb 20, 2005 10:26 am I can see I have a very long way to go as well. I too will be paying more attention to all the midi posts here.
I have Dyad DXi and it shows up as and DirectX plug in Cubase, but I can't get it to do anything. My take home from that is that I have a lot to learn about compatibility issues.
That's all cool though. I don't mind taking a little time to figgure the whole thing out. Time now to experiment with what I can do.
Thanks for the support guys!
