Hi I have used Cubasis and am interested in using Cubase as a recording medium but would like to know what spec computer is needed to cope with it well. I would like to use it to record vocals [a choir SATB] and idealy would like it to run on a laptop. What spec would be preferable and would I need a special soundcard to record vocals? My end product would be a CD of my semipro choir.

how many different tracks of audio are you gonna have layered up? i used to have a pentium 2 thatd run 8 tracks simultaniously with no problems, so any modern computer should do alright to start with.

get the most processor power, the most disk space and the most usb connectors (they come in handy) you can get for your budget.

an in answer to your question, form my experience cuabasis and cubase require pretty much the same specs.

if you fill out the gear profile in your personal profile we would know what you have, hard to say if your PC can do it if we don'tknow what your PC is.

Cubase is a little 'hoggey'. It will run on the specs they publish, however when you start putting in aftermarket plugs you may run into problems. I would suggest min of 2.4 Ghz processer, Athalon or Pentium 4 with a Gig memory on board. The sound card is as above a function of how many mics you will be using. Get your micing plans squared away first.

Per a laptop.

They have the speed and processing power but your soundcard and 2nd hard drive (if you find it necessary) are all external periferials, i.e. you are slaved to the bandwidth of firewire and usb. I don't have exact numbers, but depending on how many inputs you are using you may run into problems. With one hard drive you are tasking it with the operating system, the recording application and recording the files. If you go with a second hard drive on say usb, there too will be limitations per bandwidth of usb. Also with the soundcard, usb and firewire limitations apply per number of channels being used at once.

Just considerations.
