Musicians Friend Ratings...grrr

Has anyone else noticed that 99% of the products on musicians friend are rated 9. It's frustrating when you try to read reviews and a guy says "well, this (insert feature) is not what I expected and but (insert feature) was right on!" and he rates the thing a 10. What gives?

I'm sure that people have problems rating because they don't really have anything to compare it with. That's why I'm glad HRC is here. You guys know what's what. Thanks a lot homies.

We need a petition for more accurate MF ratings. MFin' ratings...that's what they should be called. 'cause that's what I always call 'em.

I think that one of the problems perhaps is also that once someone buys something, gets it and plays around with it, there is a tendency to give it high marks as a bit of a reflection of the fact that they bought it in the first place....

Hmmmm. dunno if that makes sense - but sort of a self fullfillnig prophecy....

I've also seen people give a MF rating without even freaking owning the product! They say "I ordered this thing and can't wait to get it! I bet it'll be wicked awesome!" 10's all across the board! Sorry, just had to talk some smack in the talkin' smack forum.

I haven't really found that to be the case in all of the stuff I looked at. I've seen plenty of ratings from horrible to excellent.

Sort of like ebay feedback

for guitar/bass/amps/effects i use harmony-central,its the best place ive found for reviews, people are so critial there, which helps keep 10 factor down! wish they had reviews for studio gear there.

I've found there reviews helpful as well, but when I'm looking for a new peice of gear, i check out the review from as many places as i can . I then try and go to Guitar center and check out the new toy, if i like it and it cool, i try and do an a/b comparison and then I go home(so i don't buy it right then and there) . I tend to order most things for my studio unless I need something, like guitar string, drum sticks or cords.

That's the key thing Geoff, always get as much info, from as many sources as you can, and then try it yourself.

I almost always buy from my local music store, they match or beat any price GC or MF offer and have been great to deal with. On my Roland TD6S they beat the best price I could find by $100 plus threw in a kick pedal and a pair sticks. :)

hehe, It's Gadsby's a small locally owned store. The down side is it's a small store and doesn't have a large selection of anything and little to no recording hardware/software. Of course they can order stuff but I usually find something that suits what I'm looking for. :)

Hmmm. I have mixed thoughts on the MF ratings. You pretty much have to read into them. One time I saw a review of a guitar that a guy gave all 1's. He said it was a piece of crap because the shoddy input jack fell apart. So he replaced it, and a few days later, it fell apart again. Now, if he replaced the bad jack with a good one, and he then broke the GOOD one, it seems to me that the problem is the guitarist, and not the guitar.

you made perfect sense jeffeost....but what i hate is and maybe it's just me,ill be lookin at stuff that I wouldn't mind purchasing so I'll go check out some reviews and everybody says sumtin good, then there's that one guy that says it's crappy and he's sorry he bought it lolololololol...and i'm like damm, what if I spend my hard earned money on this thing and feel like this guy....i'm sorry but that one review kills it for me,I understand the whole "marketing/advertisement" thing but it seems like everytime I go to look at a review, there's only like 4 or 5 w/ that one guy or if there's only 1 or 2 then it's a good one.....yea..ok....w/u say buddy

you just gotta trust your own judgement, if you like a peice of gear, cool get it (as i said check it out first if you can) . No one can tell you how to feel or think about a peice of gear. Every thing subjective.
