firewire audio interface choices for a newbie

Hello all - I'm a bassist looking into picking up an external audio interface for my laptop for recording some scratch tracks to play around with for a dub/reggae project. My guitarist recommended I check you guys out, so I've been lurking around here for a bit - very very cool site!

In a nutshell, I'm looking for an interface to plug into my firewire port (from what I've read here firewire is the way to go?) that will allow me to take a DI from my head for the bass, record grooves from my Alesis SR-16 drum machine, and record some mic'd hand percussion. I've looked quite a bit at a number of options out there, but given how many there are, I really have no idea which one I'll be happiest with. I recalled a recent issue of Bass Player Magazine mentioning the M-Audio Firewire Solo, which almost looks just right, but I'm worried the lack of a MIDI I/O would limit the use of my drum machine. So, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. And if I haven't provided enough info, feel free to yell and scream at me...

Regards,
Dave

First off, welcome to HRC. I wish that all of the first time posters would be as clear and gracious as you. It makes people want to help you!

The M-Audio Firewire Solo looks like a great unit. It appears to have everything that you need. Do you need MIDI? Do you you program your drum beats on the computer or on the unit itself?

Otherwise, it soulnds like something right up your alley. M-Audio products are widely used by HRC members, and you won't find many people complaining about them!

Jim - thanks much for the welcome. I program the drum beats on the unit itself - I guess that means I really don't need to use the MIDI out, and can just use the main stereo outs? Thanks again.

Dave
