alright, here's what ill be running this portable system with...
ibook g4 1.33ghz, 1.25g ram, os X 10.3...(external firewire HD is an option here too)...

for the most part i will only be recording two tracks of audio at a time. either one stereo (processed guitar, piano), two mono (vocals and guitar or vocals and piano) and maybe in a live situation where i would just recording the stereo tracks from a mixer...
even when mixing nothing very labor entensive. not many tracks, not many plugins...

i'm currently working with cubase 2 on a pc system, with an digitech rpx bringing the tracks into the pc via usb. it works. but it's not pretty...

now, what i ask you exp users. what are my best options for a decent, but cost efficent ad/da convertor to finish off my system...

i've looked at the didisigns MBOX, but after checking out many forums learnt that many users are finding it not to run smoothly on ibooks, and that it's usb1 based, not usb2. which really sucks. but it still might be able to meet my needs no problem...

any other suggestions...???

As far as I know, the MBOX only runs with Pro Tools software, this is the major issue with most users, and the USB1 problem that you mentioned. Not that Pro Tools isn't good, it just minimizes you future options...

I can't really recommend an interface, I haven't used many different models. I have used M Audio's Delta 10/10 which was nice, I currently run a Presonus FirePod which I love.

Keep checking back, the rest of the people here will have some more input for sure...

wow... is that sarcasm from db? about macs?

I too have a firepod, and it rocks, for something that is quick and easy to set up for live settings and all this is great.
