I posted a song a few weeks back and got some advice on re-doing the vocals and so forth! Well i've done that but i just can't seem to nail it! For some reason this thing is giving me grief :)

Anyway, here it is. This time it's gone through Ozone! Ive also added a B4 keyboard to it! could you let me know if it works or just just sticks out!

Comments are welcome!

Cheers

Bleak, it's sounding pretty good. The vocals are as you say giving a bit of trouble in places. You have a good voice, suits the song well, just need to hit those few notes a little closer to be really good. One thing I've started doing after reading an article is killing the bass or lowering it as low as possible and still give you the feel of the song (if you need it) when doing your vocals. I think it's helped me quite a bit. I don't want to sound like I think it's bad, cause I don't, it's really just a few places that need a bit more work, you've got the voice so I'm sure you can nail it.

It's a really cool song, I like it alot. I think the keyboard is a good addition. Real nice sound to the instruments and a fine job of mixing. :)

Cheers Olddog, It should be a walk in the park but I just keep straying, I tried it with just the acoustic but still no joy!

Glad you like the B4 - I wasn’t sure at first but I’ll run with it I reckon.

As for the mixing, Db's article on 'Audible frequency spectrum' is invaluable!!! Changed everything for me (mixing wise)

Gotta agree with OD here, the tune is sounding real good. I like the addition of the B4 part, nice touch for sure. The only thing I am hearing onow that might need a tiny bit of work is the kick drum and bass seem to be meshing a bit here and there. And it seems to bury the guitar now and then. Only in little bits of the track though. Otherwise, the vocals are sounding better as well.

And the mix is coming along nicely for sure.

I for one think it's top.

It is so blessed tough to know what it really sounds like listening to an mp3. The only thing I hear is something between maybe 5K & 10K hz, but that is where the mp3 will push too. Excelent match of vocal 'tone' to song 'tone'. It is just comming through a hair 'crisp' in that upper end. Again probably the mp3 effect. It is detracting just a little from the natural grit in the voice. Nice 'seat' for the vocals by the way. Care to elaberate on how you mixed the vox and why?

Thanks for the kind words guys! I did notice the kick and the bass were 'melding' a touch but within Cubase they sound spot on so i'm not sure how to fix that one!

Walt - I'm Stoked you like but at the risk of sounding like a complete newbie - What is Vox?

Sorry to be a complete pain in the arse but I just re-mixed and re-uploaded! I've tightened the bottom end and lost a lot of the verb on the vocals.

And kicked the kick up just a kick.

CHeers Noize - In that case Walt, in the other version i sat the vocasl at around 4kHz! I double tracked and had one track dry and the other with (too much) reverb and a cheeky bit of chorus!

As for why, well i'm really just testing and poking to see what sounds best. A 'suck it and see' kind of thing.

Is that what you were after?

Sounds really good Bleak. Did you do another take on the vocals? They sound better now. I really like the sound you have with the vocals. I've tried getting a similar sound but I guess my voice just isn't right for it.

Great song!

Ya, Im with OD on your voice Bleak. It has a very prominant feel to it. It kind of reminds me of the first time I heard Leo Kottke sing.

Thanks guys! No - i didn't re-do the vocals but did lose quite a bit of reverb on them. i also added a touch of compression. I have a hardware compressor and i'm always at odds wether to use both or not :)

I dont know who Leo Kottle is but i'm looking him up! hope he's ok :)

Thanks again guys!

Bleak,

Sorry for not getting back for a bit. Cable modem took a dive. Back now I think. I think you already got the answers / input needed per above. Just thought I would let you know I wasn't ignoring you.

Bleak, I posted briefly in the compilation thread, but I really like this song. I had it on repeat for about 45 minutes last night. I think the mix sounds great. And I really like the lyrics and the way you sing them. I can just feel it! Really good.

Thanks Coolo! I'm stoked you had it on repeat for so long! means a lot. I cant even listen to it for that long :)

As for the mix - i finally figured out that mixing isn't just about making something louder than others :)

Bleak, Leo is one of the great finger picking guitar players around. He didnt really sing at all untill about his 9th or 10th album. And it was a shock for people who had only heard him play. His voice is very prominant when blended with his style of guitar playing.

Bleak,

Just had to take another listen. The Vox definately have the 'grit' back in them. Don't know if it was a function of the verb or what. Nice balanced tone now. Real ear candy.

Cheers Walt! I think it was the verb -way to much in the first mix. i originally had some chorus as well but that did some strange things! i'll be dodging that one from now on :)

Noize i found a site about Leo - no tunes on it but i wil make the effort to find some.
