Hey.. I'm new to these forums and home recording and this is my very first post here.
Anyway, I'm having a problem with my mixer, a Yamaha MG10/2. When I connect my Shure SM58 microphone (wireless) to the XLR input and turn up the gain and level knobs, there seems to be a problem: there's no sound or signal. What could this be? Surely there's nothing wrong with the microphone..

Jan 11, 2005 10:41 pm Welcome to HRC, heres a few questions for ya to start with.
Have you,
A: tried the mic into another source to make sure it is OK?
B: tried something else going into the Yamaha to see if the channel is OK?
C: tried it in all the channels on the board?

Dec 13, 2005 12:50 am Hi everyone, I'm a home recording newbie with basically the same setup and problem.
I have a Shure Beta 58A mic running into a Yahama MG10/2 mixer, which then runs in a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Value sound card (from the rec out to the line in).
When I speak into the mic, the level meter doesn't go up on the mixer and there's no sound or signal. I hit the phantom power switch and the levels are all at least at the halfway point.
Any idea what the problem could be?

Welcome to HRC, both.

The problem was I had the red ST knob on the bottom right of the mixer turned all the way down. Once I turned it up, the level meter went up and the vocals I was recording through the microphone showed up in Audacity. I thought that knob was only for the ST OUTs, but it controls the REC OUTs as well, which makes sense now since they're pretty much related.
In summary for anyone with a similar problem, I ran RCAs from the REC OUTs of the mixer into the LINE IN of the sound card. In Audacity, I set the source on the top right to "Analog Mix", and it records everything great.
