what is the best/most versatile/most valuable snare drum for under $250 dollars?
I was going to get the pearl smx1455, but it is backordered for decades

Look into something from DW (drum workshop).
They build some great drums, and I like several of their snares I have listened to. Cant give ya any models though, sorry.

I dunno the price, but one drummer I worked with had a nice Tama kit and a thin snare, I think he called it a "picollo snare" and that was the sharpest, snappiest, coolest snare drum I have ever heard.

Picollo snares are used for sheer volume and brightness. They have their purpose, and I know many drummers who use them as their primary snare. They are VERY loud, and have one of the fastest attacks, as they are the shallowest type of snare you can buy. Personally, I like 7" x 14" snares. when hit lightly, they have almost a field snare type sound, but have a very fast attack when you hit hard. they are also low-tone and rather dark sounding. I like that.

As for the price of picollo snares...

You can get them for anywhere from $30.00 for a Pulse snare all the way up to $139.99 for a Pearl.

which ever sounds best to you. when it comes to something like a snare... it is ALL up to what you think sounds the nicest. go to a few shops... test a few out. get a feal for what sound you are after.

The 6.5" will be just a bit deeper and fuller sounding then the 5". So as stated above, you might be best off going and listening and chooseing the one you like the sound of.
