Headphones or monitors?

Hi,

I'm looking to put together my first recording setup and am wondering if you guys recommend headphones or monitors. I won't be working with very many people, mostly just by myself. Would I be better off with a few pairs of headphones and a headphone amp? What headphones would you recommend? How about a headphone amp?

Thanks for your help!

Mike

you will need both at different times. I prefer to use monitors when at all possible, as they generally get the best sound quality per dollar spent, but when recording things with a mic, such as a guitar amp or something, headphone are often necessary, but not necessarily of the highest quality, just to hear the music and record to it.

I have a pair of AKG K270's and I've been very satisfied with them. Those are lightweighted (270 grams) and the frequency response is quite wide too (20Hz-28KHz)..

Another thing to look at in the decision here, is do you need to keep thing's quite, or can you use moniter's all the time. I know in my old studio, headphone's where mandatory after 7:00PM, but here it doesn't matter as the room is fairly isolated and very quite. But as dB said, near field moniter's are the weapon of choice for the fullest sound field possible.
