I am new in recording; I have some old cassettes that I want to convert into mp3. I have a Laptop Sony PCG-K115M (PIV 2.8 Ghz, 512MB RAM) but there is no separate LINE IN, only two jack MIC and Speaker. I tried with MIC to connect through TAPE Record by using 3.5 cable and GOLDWAVE software.
Can anyone give answer of my some questions?
1. Is MIC and LINE IN is same thing? Or I must need LINE IN for converting cassettes into mp3?
2. If I need Line In , what is the best EXTERNAL SOUND BLASTER? Is Creative Audigy 2NX is best for my condition?
3. There is noise more than in original cassettes? Is there any problem in my laptop soundcard, MIC jack or software? How can I reduce?

Hi, welcome to HRC

1- no, they are not the same thing, mic in has a level boost necessary for recording mics, but not line level input.

2- I wouldn't recommend a SoundBlaster, though would likely work in your rather light-duty needs, I would say take a look at service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear or something similar. www.audiotrak.net also has some great external products.

3- Goldwave should be fine, audacity.sourceforge.net is a very good freeware audio editor as well. I like it a lot myself. The problem is likely the sound chip in your laptop conmbined with trying to record a line level signal with a mic level input.

Thank you for your valuable answer.

In the light of your answer now I have three options
a. I purchased the product UA-1X USB Audio Interface u mention in auduitrack.net.
b. Is Preamp will work with my laptop mic jack to record from hi fi?
c. My friend has a Packard Bell Audio Dream mp3 player; it has a line in jack and record from Hi Fi. Do you think the quality from this mp3 player recording AND through PC with audioatrack.net product will be same?

Please let me know I am now thinking to choose one of them.

not really familiar with the product mentioned in option a, but that seems like the best option to me. option c seems like it would be an easy fix if quality wasn't of the utmost importance.
