Echo in monitoring

I'm using a M-Audio Firewire 410 interface with a Powerbook (using Soundtrack) to record voice-overs. When I monitor the audio, I hear an echo through my headphones which I have coming out of the 410. Even coming straight out of the computer, I get the same problem. Is there a way to avoid this? I can't seem to be able to access M-Audio preferences. The recording is unaffected. Thanks.
