I'm a newbie so please bear with me

i am trying to figure out how i can conect my fostex 280 analog mixer through my soundblaster audigy in such a way that if i plug a bunch of mics into my mixer when i hit record, each track on my mixer records into seperate tracks on cool edit pro.

i dont know if this is possible but i hope so. anyways heres a list of the outputs/inputs my gear has and then if anyone could please let me know what i need to connect all this with and which spots to plug it all into and even how to set up CEP so it detects al the seperate tracks, i'd GREATLY appreciate it

Sound Blaster Audigy External
-SPDIF In
-SPDIF out
-Optical In
-Optical Out
-Aux In R & L
-Line In 2/ Mic 2

Fostex 280 multitracker

I guess off the top of my head I would run the tape 1,2,3 and 4 out to the aux in and line ins.

As far as how to set up CEP so each track sees a different in, I am not sure, as I don't use it, but it will also involve some panning to get the stereo linein to see itself as two differentjack rather than a stereo group.

so, dB, what you're saying is Foo can only record two tracks at one time, the left and right outputs of the mixer? I gathered the same thing. Unless there's some way to send certain channels out the effects sends without sending them to the main mix..?

I'm gonna make an example here...

Say I've a card with four ins, and four outs. Also I've got a mixer with four outs (two Aux, two line). With me so far? Okey, now I plug the line outs into two of the inputs, and the aux outs into two of the other inputs. Now I'm going to go into my recording software and select channel one. I'll select the input as being right soundcard 1/2 or something like that. I then, on my mixer, pan the first track hard right. I then do the same with track two, only it will be left soundcard 1/2. And then the same with track three and four, instead of 1/2 though it will be 3/4. This will record 4 tracks simultaniously on four different channels. Then in the software you can pan them to center again if you like.

No, Jamie, aux stereo outs and line stereo outs can send 4 signals, 2 out the line, panned hard left and right, and 2 out the aux...so you could use it to send 4 signals.

I've got a the same set-up, but i havn't found a way to record 4 tracks at a time on cool edit as the audigy can only record 2 at a time. I think.

Yes, the Audigy is only going to see 2 track's at once. But as dB said, if he has a card that has 4 in's then that set-up will work. But as you said the SB card only has 2 usable in's at a time.
