I was just wondering how you know , how much ohms are 'in' your amp , 'cuz there always talking about 800 Watts at 4 ohms ( for example ) ???

Dec 14, 2004 01:37 pm Ohms is resistence, ohms are not "in" the amp, they are in the path to to the speakers, and you amp is built to handle certain amounts.
So, depending on the amount of resistence your speakers and cabling have the output from the amp that actually gets thru varies. Most amps are designed to work with 4 to 8 ohms of resistence, going over or under this number can burn out your amp. Some work with 2, but it's not as common.

Dec 14, 2004 01:45 pm ok , I understand that but how do I find how much resistance the cables offer ???
Dec 14, 2004 01:47 pm The vast majority of any resistence is in the speakers themselves, assuming you are using even a moderately decent cable. Worry about the speakers.

Dec 20, 2004 08:37 pm If you want to find out how much resistance a cable has you will need an Ohm meter. Then you simply hook one lead to one end of the cable and the other lead to the other end and read the resistnace. This will tell you how much resistance is in the cable.
Cheaper cables will usuall have higher resistance.

Dec 20, 2004 11:33 pm My amp used to have 8 ohms per side but one fell out. Now one side is louder than the other. Wish I could find it. Bet the cat ate it.
