Getting started - Need some guidance

G'day,

Well, after some searching, it looks like I have come to the right place.

I have a top end computer with a Creative Labs Audigy 2 platinum internal and enought RAM, CPU and performance HDD to see me do anything I want.
I also have:-
Roland MC-303 Sequencer
Boss DR-202 Drum Machine
BehRinger 6 track mixer

Now I have this great equipment and a rudimentary understanding of what each does (I can make noise on individual items) I would like to know how I can make it all come together for me and I believe MIDI is the secret.

Mt problem is that until I read through a few of these posts I didn't even know what MIDI was other than an audio standard.

I am happy to read through tutorials if there are recommended websites and I'd like to know what my gear is capable of doing.

Can I import a MIDI file into my 303?
My soundcard comes with Cubasis VST - is it going to do what I want (create and control music)?
SHould I look at buying FruityLoops, Reason, Acid or are there freebie applications that can do all?
Can I export notes from my 303 onto my PC?

Questions...Questions...Questions!?!
I don't know where to start.
I don't even know how to hook up and setup my gear to work together - Hahahahaha: I can get them to work individually so not completely lame.

Any help and guidance FAQ's - Throw them all at me.

Thanks Heaps
D

OK, first we need to iron out one thing, the SoundBlaster, while considered top end in terms of typical consumers, for audio recording and production, it's bottom end...it will work well enough to help you get your feet wet, but you will likely run in to limitiations down the road.

MIDI is a data standard, not really "audio". It's a datatype. MIDI transfers no audio at all, what it does is take data from your controller, such as which key you hit, how hard you hit it, how long you help it down and all that, and sends it to a device which takes that data, looks at which sound sample is assigned to it, makes that sound as loud and as long as the information tells it to.

There are a few FAQ's here www.homerecordingconnection.com/faq.php to look at. Give them a go and se if you can get your questions a little more specific.

woah cubase vst comes with your sound card? that programs probably worth more than the card it self!Cool
any way I suggest getting a proper audio interface like dB implied
Id imagine your cubase vst is going to be your main sequencer and i don't think your MC-303 is a sequencer at all Im pretty sure its actually a groovebox as for importing exporting sounds to and from pc i don't know as to what software to get we are gonna need to know what kinda music you plan on making and as far as hooking up your gear don't look at me i'm not even there myself yet

No, his card comes with Cubasis, not Cubase. Cubasis is Cubase's little brother.

Yeah, it can sequence, and it multitracks too, it's your all purpose multitrack app...

Yeah, those Audigy 2 cards are shipping with Cubasis and Wavelab Lite. I tried to be sneaky when I sent my Audigy back and thought I'd keep the software installed, but they wouldn't work without the Audigy card installed. Doh!
