funny ways names and nicknames evolved

O just read a post in another forum from 'triprolo' about the name of his band and how it evoloved:

Quote:
We did go by the name Webster's Wrap cause the bass player who's last name was Webster couldn't wrap his strings around the machine head worth a flip. It really looked ugly and one day I was putting on a string at ppractice and looked it over and said, "That looks like a webster wrap." and they just fell out laughing. But We were afraid everyone would think we were RAP and so we changed it one day.

Which I found funny, I thought there may be some other good stories out there...

I know one band I was in was all zep-heads, except me, and they insisted on playing "The Rain Song" and I hate that song...er, well, didn't want to play it live cuz it's a pain, switching guitars in the middle, bass is only in half of it, etc, just not a good song for a live rock party band to gig with.

During one gig I got off stage during the non-bass part which we were gigging this little club and my bass amp started feeding back a little, I dove on stage and turned it down and proceeded to go get a drink...

years later (last week actually) I went to see some of those guys practice in their new band (still just doing covers in a basement) and somebody started feeding back...to my surprise, one of them from that gig way back when yelled at the dude and said "hey, your amp is 'Danning'" and they all laughed.

Apparantly, my slip up that night led to a nickname for feeding back that I did not learn about until almost 10 years later. :-)

One band I know had a drummer who's girlfriend was named "laura", and he was always late for practice, so they always joked "He needed some more of laura"...the band name: "Somora Lora" :-)

Anyone, anyone?

I've had a plethora of nicknames over the years. Some of my friends call me captain, which originally was short for captain nappy. Apparently there was some street ball hooper in NY that called himself captain nappy. Well I had my sister do some wierd stuff to my hair, and I showed up with my hair looking all funky at the courts, and someone hit me with the captain nappy. It stuck, and am now still called cap'n even though I shave my head and don't really have hair anymore.

My bands' name is 'Innocent Cabbage', because the drummer in our band was hanging around with his mum talking to a lady who was in customs, and bitching about how people bring through fruit and vegetables and stuff and that some of them have flies and diseases that really, really mess up the local ecosystem and she was quite passionate and explaining it all and at one point said that almost everything from apples to pears to "even the innocent cabbage" can bring in pests...

So it stuck... it's not a very good name though.. :S

Im a guitarist and most guitarist know when your just hanging around at practice after you've practiced a song, you tend to just fly off on nothing, just to be playing I geuss.

Well I came into to this band where the last guitarist, named Richard, kept doing that and it annoyed the whole band. And when I'd do that they'd always yell "richard!!" way loud even thought Richard was long gone. ha ha

That still carries whith my friends to this day. It's been 5 years. So guitarist and drumers, don't Richard at practice. It drives everyone crazy. Especialy if their discussing the making of a song!

Well, most of you hear know me as noize2u. But my real and longest sticking nickname is Pig, thus the studio named PigPen.

The Noize2U name came from my first attempt at writing all my own original compositions on synthisizer's. I had created my own demo in a studio were they gave me lots of free time as I recorded there with the band I was in at the time, as well as bringing in lots of new bands to record there. It is also were I cut my teeth learning to mix and enginer. Anyway, I sent out a few copies of the tape (this was before CD's by the way) and then was given the name of a man to see who was into original aritsts and cutting edge music at the time. The music I composed was very cutting edge combining the synth's and hard rock guitar and such. Most of the arrangements were more like fussion then anything else. I waited for 2 hours to see this guy, got in his office and he jsut pops in the tape, listens to maybe 30 seconds of each track, pops out the tape and hands it back to me saying, "Thats just noise to me."

Well about 3 weeks went by and I got a response form a small production company that wanted to pay me to come in and record better versions of 2 of those tunes for a new fusion jazz compilation. I did the new recordings and they asked how I wanted the artist name to be put on it. It only took me about 10 seconds to come up with the name. Noize2U I said proudly. A few weeks went by and I got my 2 copies of the vinyl.

Being the quick thinker I am, I sent one copy over to the jerk who was kind enough to give me my new name, and thanked him for the chance to have him listen.
