I am currently looking at buying the Behringer UB 1622FX-Pro mixer. I notice that it has preamps built in. I am trying to limit the number of electrical outlets I need (always limitations in the house). My first question is: Since the mixer has preamps built in, can I use good "passive" monitors instead of powered ones. Do the passive monitors work off of the preamp built in to the mixer? Next question: Do passive monitors require you to plug them in? I am hoping I can just use one outlet for the mixer, and use no outlets for the speaker monitors. Can you recommend a good set of passive monitors with really good bass response? Which monitors in the "Studio Equipment" section of this website are passive?

You are confusing preamps and amps. preamps are simply to boost microphone signal for the recording device to more easily accept and it will sound better. They do not amplify monitors. You will either need active speakers or passive speakers and an amp. Either way, it's a plug.

FWIW, I have the 1622 myself, it's a great little mixer.

I'd suggest getting a power strip. I use 2 plus a APC UPS. Lots of things need power around a studio.

That aside, I use Tannoy Reveal passive monitors. The active version is ~750$, while I got the passives for 320$US. Very nice. You would need some sort of amplifier to drive the monitors. I use an old bookshelf type stereo unit. It's not great, but works for now.

Just for grins:

Microphones make mic level signal. This very small signal needs to get brought up to line level signal which is much bigger. This is where the pre-amp is used. Once the signal is line level, it can be manipulated around and sent every-which-way through your mixer or pc or what have you. To get the signal to come out loud from speakers, there needs to be an amplifier of some sort. Active monitors have the amplifier built into them, and only require line level input. Passive monitors require some external device to amplify the signal for them, like a powered mixer, power amplifier (alesis, crown, QSC, etc) or such. Passives require amplified signal to make loud output.

Hope that helps.
