Anyone ever re-tolex an amp?

Got some time on my hands folks and want to recover an old fender champ 30. It's a 1x10 combo (pics: www.geocities.com/bennishahn/amppic1.html ) that just looks bad. Thinking of going with some cool or unusual colors for this (I am never going to sell it.) Judging from the pictures, how hard would it be to recover the thing and put a new grill cloth with new tubing on? If I decide to do that, I might go crazy, remove the amp, sand off the finish on the front, paint it a different color with new knobs, etc...

Anyway, anyone with any tips/experiences/suggestions?

Thanks.

Customizing gear like that is way cool ! Y'a get the gearheads to look, and say: "wtf is that ?!?" heh heh No tips, other than measure twice and use the right cement . Post pics, if y'a can !

Ha! I've got an old CBS Fender Vibrochamp that I was considering re-tolexing (is that even a word?). If you ever get around to it, lemme know and post some pics. I'd sure be interested in whatever you find out!

id just be careful with any electrics inside - amps sometimes store a charge even when theyre not turned on...just so you know

sounds like an awesome project though!

Ah, so true. But as long as you keep your fingers away from the electronics, you should be safe. As for the project, I looked this up, and maybe it'll help:

thanks much GuitarLord. That will be handy.

What I am thinking right now is a flame amp.

I am going to make a template of a flame and have it cut out of red tolex. Then have the flame run up both sides of the amp. the rest of the amp will be white (blonde if I cannot find) tolex. gona then airbrush the amp faceplate red and put some different words/numbers for the dials. ("this one goes to eleven") Even a switch with "Suck - Good"

It will be fun.

I know of a great place to get all of the pieces that you could ever need, want, or desire.

www.tubesandmore.com/

It's Antique Electronic Supply. You can get the Tolex, Grill cloth, knobs, piping, you name it. Oh, even the glue.

Redoing the amp is pretty easy. The Tolex glue is not an instant bond. So, you have a little time to get it right.

Sounds like a fun project. Can't wait to see what your going to come up with.
